Fast-food companies have developed some clever marketing strategies over the years, but the recent trend of official video games from restaurants is perhaps the strangest. Now Wendy’s is hopping on the trend with a new Steam game that draws from classic Final Fantasy-style JRPGs and mixes it with a fast-food-themed fantasy world. WendyQuest: Legend of the Four Corner Stones doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s an intriguing enough collaboration that Steam users will want to keep an eye on the project.

The return of classic Final Fantasy with the launch of Final Fantasy Resonance has brought traditional pixel art JRPGs back into the spotlight. With a clear hunger for more of these retro-style games from old-school JRPG fans, it’s no surprise that more developers are looking to put a twist on the Final Fantasy formula. What is surprising is that Wendy’s, of all companies, is tackling the genre in 2026 with its official development of WendyQuest.

WendyQuest: Legend of the Four Corner Stones Officially Coming to Steam

Developed by 81monkeys, WendyQuest: Legend of the Four Corner Stones puts the titular fast food mascot in the role of hero, teaming up with fast food-inspired companions like the French Fry Archer, Spicy Chickeneer, and Frosty Mage. The story follows Wendy as she battles against Dr. Mechborg and the evil Mech Corp in order to save Savoria from soggy fries and frozen beef. A major part of the branding for Wendy’s restaurants is the use of fresh ingredients, which plays a major role in the story of WendyQuest.

Welcome to WendyQuest – a well-done 2D adventure RPG from Wendy’s packed with crispy combat, handcrafted pixel art, and fresh, never frozen puzzles. Play as redheaded warrior Wendy & battle evil mech-monsters to save a culinary kingdom in peril.

Features of WendyQuest

  • Turn-based combat
  • Timing attacks perfectly deals bonus damage
  • Foes like Golden Archers, Hot Sludge Sundaes, and other fast food fiends
  • Different flavors deal more damage to specific enemy types
  • Food-themed regions including salty forests, seasoned deserts, rugged beefy bluffs, and Frosty-capped peaks

WendyQuest puts a fast food twist on the features a fan of traditional JRPGs would expect from a Final Fantasy-like game. Battles are turn-based, with players able to use a variety of food-themed weapons and skills, with the opportunity to deal bonus damage if they can time their attack inputs perfectly, or when using a skill with the flavor type that the enemy is weak to, similar to Pokemon type advantages.

There are also some clear shots at fast food rivals like McDonald’s via the Golden Archer enemies. WendyQuest will also take players across five different food-themed regions, claiming to offer hidden secrets for players who venture off the game’s beaten path. The 2D pixel art of WendyQuest is also a clear throwback to the pixel art style of older Final Fantasy games and other JRPGs on the SNES.

Wendy’s isn’t the first fast food brand to market its food through official video games. Official fast food restaurant games date as far back as titles like McDonald’s Treasure Land Adventure on the Sega Genesis and Sneak King, Burger King’s official game released on the Xbox 360. More recently, fast food video games have made a comeback with KFC’s I Love You, Colonel Sanders! A Finger Lickin’ Good Dating Simulator in 2019 and McDonald’s Grimace’s Birthday in 2023. With the Wendy’s brand’s history of viral online marketing through social media, it was only a matter of time before it licensed an official video game.
