SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

Rare and Xbox Game Studios’ pirate adventure Sea of Thieves has now been out for over six years, allowing players the opportunity of a lifetime to live out their pirate fantasies on the open seas. After its initial release on PC and Xbox One, Sea of Thieves was met with a less-than-stellar reception, largely due to a lack of content. However, since then, the action-adventure game has received numerous updates that have increased its popularity. Now, Sea of Thieves is finally sailing its way over to the PS5, making it Rare’s first game to ever be released on a PlayStation console.

For the most part, PS5 players can expect the same Sea of Thieves experience as those who play it on PC and Xbox consoles. Even so, for those who have yet to play the seafaring adventure, Sea of Thieves is by and large a vastly different game than they may be used to, so they may wish to know what they can expect.

After over a decade of development hell, Skull and Bones has finally released, though Sea of Thieves may have just taken the wind out of its sails.

What to Expect From Sea of Thieves on PS5

Sea of Thieves Features a Vast Open World to Explore

As its name suggests, one of Sea of Thieves‘ most prominent features is the sea. PS5 players will spend the majority of their time in Sea of Thieves sailing from island to island in search of valuable treasure and other helpful items that can benefit them on their journey. While traveling on the water, players may encounter dangerous enemies (including other players if they are enjoying Sea of Thieves‘ “High Seas” mode), and islands are often home to enemies as well.

Sea of Thieves Can Be Played Solo or With Friends

Sea of Thieves has always been playable solo or with friends, but its solo experience was originally more unforgiving than its cooperative experience. Thankfully, the game officially added a solo mode in late 2023, making Sea of Thieves much more accessible for lone pirates. Players can now choose between the “High Seas” and “Safer Seas” modes, which respectively offer traditional or solo gameplay. “High Seas” will allow other players to be present in the world, who will sometimes engage competitively, whereas “Safer Seas” will provide a strictly PvE experience.

Sea of Thieves’ Core Gameplay Loop Focuses on Completing Voyages for Various Factions

At the heart of Sea of Thieves‘ gameplay loop, players will complete voyages for a variety of factions. Sea of Thieves has three main trading companies that offer voyages: the Merchant Alliance, the Order of Souls, and the Gold Hoarders. Each faction provides a different type of voyage according to their mission, with the Merchant Alliance tasking players with delivering cargo to certain vendors, the Order of Souls offering voyages that focus on combat, and the Gold Hoarders requiring players to retrieve a hidden treasure chest.

As they complete voyages, players will increase their reputation with each faction, thereby granting them access to improved rewards.

Sea of Thieves’ Progression Is Tied to Cosmetic Rewards

Unlike many other live-service games, Sea of Thieves‘ progression is entirely tied to cosmetic rewards. Rather than improving their equipment, players will complete voyages that offer purely cosmetic rewards. As such, a player’s success is solely reliant upon their skill, as opposed to enhancing their character or ship. As they complete voyages, Sea of Thieves players will be given access to various outfits for their pirates, as well as cosmetic customization rewards for their ships.

Players who enjoy Sea of Thieves on PS5 will be treated with the same experience as those who play on PC and Xbox, even down to having a Microsoft account to play. Nevertheless, it is high time Rare’s pirate adventure made its way to the PlayStation, as an even broader demographic of players can now enjoy sailing the high seas in style like so many others have been able to for over six years now.
