Cayde-6 is without a doubt one of the Destiny franchise’s most beloved characters. His unhinged sarcasm, steadfast loyalty, and the convincing vocal performance of Nathan Fillion have cemented Cayde as a memorable and iconic character in Destiny. This is precisely why his death at the hands of Uldren Sov in Destiny 2‘s Forsaken expansion was a shock to all. Fans were not only left with their mouths agape at the thought of never being able to interact with their favorite Exo again, but they were also confused as to why Bungie would kill off one of its best characters. Nevertheless, it could be argued that Cayde’s death is one of the most important events in Destiny 2‘s history, simply due to the level of impact it has had on the story, so to resurrect him now could mean undoing all of that. Still, that is exactly what Bungie has done, as Cayde-6 has been resurrected for Destiny 2‘s upcoming Final Shape expansion.

It’s currently unclear in what way Cayde-6 will return from death in The Final Shape. It could very well be that the footage shown in the teaser trailer for The Final Shape indicates a full return for the Hunter, but it could also be showing nothing more than something taking place in Ikora’s imagination. That being said, it would probably be a bad move for Bungie to tease Cayde’s return in promotional material and then not follow through with it, so he is more than likely to make a meaningful comeback. The only question is what his role will be in The Final Shape and where the story of Destiny 2 may take him after that, if he ends up having a presence beyond the expansion’s campaign.

Where Destiny 2 Could Take Cayde-6 After The Final Shape

Cayde-6 Will Likely Be Given Plenty of Attention in The Final Shape

It has been nearly six years since Cayde’s death, so The Final Shape will presumably spend a significant amount of time with him, especially considering his stellar reputation with the Destiny 2 community. It might be seen as a letdown if he is simply put on the back burner throughout The Final Shape, which means he may have a prominent role in the story. Of course, this is assuming he has indeed returned and is more than a mere figment of Ikora’s imagination. At the same time, it might make even more sense to save The Final Shape’s story for the Witness and not focus too much on Cayde. In that case, he would need a more important role in Destiny 2‘s future.

Cayde-6 Could Reprise His Role as Destiny 2’s Hunter Vanguard

As Cayde is the former Hunter Vanguard and that position has remained vacant since his untimely death, it seems obvious that his return would also see him reprising the role. At one point, one of the most likely characters to take on that role was Crow, but he is gone now. It’s likely the position has remained vacant since Cayde’s death because Bungie has always had plans for him to come back at some point. If that’s the case, Cayde will certainly be the Hunter Vanguard once again, though it’s unlikely to happen in the early moments of The Final Shape.

After the main story of The Final Shape concludes, Destiny 2 could devote more time to Cayde. After all, if he is indeed resurrected for the expansion, he would have little choice but to focus on the matter at hand — specifically, on finding and defeating the Witness. Once the Witness has been dealt with, Destiny 2 could spend more time on Cayde, perhaps even further developing his character by having players go through a series of quests with him. This series of quests could eventually result in him taking back his position as the Hunter Vanguard for a satisfying conclusion to his story – or passing the torch to someone else. All of this said, however, wherever Destiny 2 takes Cayde-6, it will be good to have him back.
