- Hero Mastery Gauntlet might be the solution to the demand for more PvE content and could provide an opportunity for competitive players to showcase their teamwork and strategy.
This year, Overwatch 2 is set to undergo various updates, encompassing additions like new heroes, maps, and game modes. Although opinions on some of these upcoming changes may vary, a substantial amount of content will certainly come to Overwatch 2 in 2024. One intriguing addition includes an addition to the Hero Mastery game mode, a feature that was added during the mid-season patch of Season 6.
While this future update was only briefly touched upon at BlizzCon 2023, it may turn out to be the hidden gem that Overwatch 2 needs. Hero Mastery Gauntlet, an intriguing new co-op mode, is slated for release sometime this year. Though details remain scarce, Blizzard has confirmed that it will include tower defense elements, waves of attacking AI, and unique power-ups.

Overwatch 2’s Upcoming Game Mode Will Require Coordination
Hero Mastery Gauntlet is a subset of the Hero Mastery game mode, though instead of playing solo to overcome challenging obstacles, teams will work together to defeat oncoming different waves of training bots. Monica Lee, Overwatch 2‘s game producer, stated, “For me, Overwatch has been a social game. And we’re really looking forward to bringing that into Hero Mastery next year with Hero Mastery Gauntlet.” For those who enjoy the team-based elements of Overwatch 2, this may be an extremely promising addition. Consequently, as the attacking bots get more difficult, communication and strategy should become all the more important.
Hero Mastery Gauntlet Might Be The PvE Content Fans Have Longed For
Since the hero-shooter first launched, fans have criticized the replayability of Overwatch 2‘s PvE content. Some believe that many of the latest PvE missions and storylines have no long-lasting appeal. Fortunately, with Hero Mastery Gauntlet’s seasonally rotating cast of three heroes, players will have a chance to demonstrate their mechanical skill and situational awareness on different characters. At the time of writing, there are ten heroes currently in Hero Mastery or releasing soon. This leaves 29 heroes to join Hero Mastery Gauntlet’s ranks later this year.
This hero count does not include unreleased heroes such as Venture, “Space Ranger,” or the unnamed tank character.
Most significantly, Hero Mastery Gauntlet is going to become a permanent feature when it does launch. This means that, unlike game modes such as Overwatch 2‘s Trials of the Sanctuary, this feature won’t be a limited-time event that disappears after two weeks. Due to this, Hero Mastery Gauntlet could finally be the answer to the players asking for more PvE content. Since its launch, the clamor for more co-op challenges has only grown louder, and this new mode could be the ideal response to those wishes.
Furthermore, not just a bone thrown to Overwatch 2 PvE enthusiasts, Hero Mastery Gauntlet might be inviting to competitive players as well. Its co-op challenges could offer a welcome change of pace, fostering teamwork and strategic mastery alongside friends. Lamentably, Blizzard has yet to give this feature a release date, which means it could be coming quite soon, or it could be released closer to the end of the year. With any luck, the developers will share more information sooner rather than later.
Overwatch 2 is Blizzard’s free-to-play team-based first-person shooter. The title features some new heroes like Junker Queen and Sojourn, as well as returning favorites.
