GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

The Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection hasn’t gone over well, thanks in no small part to the fiasco that took place on its launch day. While it’s hard to say whether the game’s many issues could have been avoided if the title was approached differently, there is a chance that a ground-up remake of the original games could have saved Battlefront Classic Collection.

The Battlefront Classic Collection has been plagued with issues, especially its launch. When the game opened its doors, the game’s multiplayer had only three servers available to service thousands of players. In addition, the game came with a smorgasbord of bugs as well as a 30 FPS lock and a gargantuan 60-70 GB file size—all of which served to kneecap player investment immediately. Similar optimization issues occurred last year with the PC launch of Jedi: Survivor, but Battlefront Classic Collection doesn’t have the excuse of substantial original content.

Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection Should’ve Gone For A Full Remake

Battlefront Classic Collection‘s critical failure not only worsens the standing of Star Wars games in general, but the ailing Battlefront franchise specifically. DICE’s Battlefront 2 was widely slammed for its monetization—and even now that things have calmed down and the game is enjoyed, its player base dwindles constantly. Rather than providing a new multiplayer experience that recaptures nostalgia for the classic Battlefront games, the franchise is again turning away players in droves. If the goal was to build up a new Battlefront game while exciting old fans, a ground-up remake would’ve been the better way forward.

A Battlefront Remake Would Have Allowed For More Changes And More Longevity

Battlefront Classic Collection did make some improvements to the original Battlefront games—but even if it launched to applause, it would still be limited by its concept. A remaster of this kind could only ever offer a few graphical improvements, better online functionality, and a pinch of bonus content since fans want an element of preservation; those drawn in by nostalgia want to relive old gameplay in an authentic way with some modern comforts.

However, a proper remake that rebuilds everything from scratch opens up more options. If this route had been taken, not only could Battlefront Classic Collection have included a complete visual overhaul, but it would have allowed for more new content. This would’ve made its price (more than the original games combined, both of which are now about 20 years old) far more justified. There is the argument that this version of Classic Collection would just become another entry in the modern Battlefront series, but a smaller experience that still hits all the original games’ beats would still be a vastly different experience to any Battlefront 3.

On the subject of the modern-era Battlefront games, a full remake of Classic Collection would be better suited for content updates. This would have been a great move for keeping the Battlefront franchise alive, as it would have provided a multiplayer experience that remained evergreen. It would have kept fans engaged with the series in lieu of a Battlefront 3 or some other Star Wars multiplayer release.

A Ground-Up Remake Could Have Caught Optimization Issues

While it’s impossible to know precisely how major optimization issues like a bloated file size, bugs, frame-rate locks, a lack of server support, and other Battlefront Classic Collection controversies happened, a game that rebuilt the originals from scratch could have had more of a chance to catch issues. At the very least, it would have forced a longer development cycle that could’ve roped in more QA testing.
