Romance is one of the most entertaining parts of Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, but it can feel unpredictable. If your Miis refuse to fall in love no matter what you do, you’re not alone. The romance system in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream can be confusing, especially when the game doesn’t clearly explain exactly how relationships work.

Why Won’t Miis Fall in Love in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream?
Miis may not fall in love in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream if their friendship level is too low, their dating preferences don’t align, or they rarely interact. Romance is also restricted between Miis of different age groups and those set as real-world family members, and there is an element of randomness to the system. Because of this, even compatible Miis may take time to fall in love and some patience is required. In some cases, Miis may not be able to fall in love at all due to these restrictions, regardless of what you do.
What Prevents Miis From Falling in Love
There are several conditions that can prevent Miis from falling in love:
- Dating preferences: Miis with misaligned dating preferences cannot pursue romance with each other. You can check and change a Mii’s dating preference through the Edit Mii menu, and you can learn more about this feature in our how to edit Miis guide.
- Age: Grown-up and kid Miis cannot fall in love. A kid is any Mii under the age of 18, and you can adjust ages in the Edit Mii menu.
- Real-world family: Miis that are set as related family members cannot form romantic relationships with each other. However, this restriction can be overridden by changing their relationship status to “partner” in the Edit Mii menu.
- Friendship: Miis must become friends before they can develop romantic feelings.
How Personality Affects Romance
Personality affects how Miis behave and interact with each other. While the game doesn’t clearly explain every detail, different personality types can lead to noticeable differences in how Miis respond to conversations, events, and social situations.
Because of this, personality may affect compatibility, and you could try aligning your Miis’ personality types more closely if they simply won’t fall in love. For more on this system, see our Mii personality change guide.
How to Improve Your Chances of Romance
If your Miis aren’t falling in love, make sure none of the restrictions above apply first, then try the following:
- Use the Edit Mii menu to confirm that their dating preferences align, that they are from the same age group, and that they are not real-world family members. To access that menu, select a Mii by pressing A, then press Y to bring up the Mii Menu, and then select Edit Mii at the bottom.
- Encourage frequent interaction between the Miis. If the Miis have been separated for a while, hold A to lift one and place them next to the other to start a conversation. This will eventually cause the Miis to become friends, a requirement for romance, and continued interaction will lead to love.
- Be patient. It can take Miis time to develop romantic feelings for one another, even when they are compatible. However, if you are diligent about making your Miis interact, you should eventually get to events that lead to love.
Can You Force Miis to Fall in Love?
No, there is no way to directly force Miis to fall in love. You can encourage romance by improving the Miis’ relationship through frequent interaction, but you do not have full control over exactly when loving feelings will develop.
