The Legend of Zelda series has made its way to plenty of Nintendo platforms over the years, but some of the older titles remain difficult to access or play. The Wind Waker is one of the most obvious examples, especially after its original GameCube release and subsequent HD remaster on Wii U. Despite its status as one of the best 3D Zelda games, The Wind Waker has never received a more modern release.

The Wii U version of Zelda: Wind Waker also demonstrated how much the 2003 adventure could benefit from higher resolutions and quality-of-life improvements (even if that version itself remained locked to Nintendo’s hardware). For years, getting The Wind Waker running elsewhere has consequently meant relying on emulation, but now there’s another method.

The Wind Waker Recomp Hits PC

Now, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is playable on PC and Mac through a new fan-made recompilation project called Wind Waker Recomp. The project is already available through its GitHub repository, with ready-made builds for Windows 10/11 and Apple Silicon Macs. Unlike a conventional emulator, Wind Waker Recomp recompiles the original GameCube game’s code into native code for modern platforms, allowing The Wind Waker to run as a standalone application.

Find the odd one out before the timer hits zero.

The result goes well beyond simply getting The Wind Waker to boot on a PC. Wind Waker Recomp supports higher rendering resolutions, widescreen displays, modern controllers, keyboard and mouse controls, save states, and frame interpolation that can take the game’s original 30 FPS output to 60, 120, or even 240 FPS on compatible hardware. The project also includes optional quality-of-life changes, including features inspired by The Wind Waker HD such as the Swift Sail, faster climbing, quicker doors, and faster scene transitions.

There is an important distinction between Wind Waker Recomp and an official PC port, however. The project does not include Nintendo’s game data, meaning players need their own legally obtained U.S. GameCube copy of The Wind Waker (GZLE01, revision 0) to supply the required game files. Wind Waker Recomp itself is an independent fan project and does not distribute the copyrighted assets from the original game. As fans know, minus a few historic exceptions like Mario Teaches Typing from the 1990s, Nintendo does not support PC ports and prefers its closed ecosystem approach still for modern consoles like the Nintendo Switch 2 (Nintendo games on PC would likely mean the apocalypse is nigh).

That said, an Nvidia GeForce leak from 2021 did suggest some Nintendo games could officially come to PC, but 5 years later, that has not happened. Emulation is the main way to do that, but this recomp project goes a long way, too.
