Grand Theft Auto 6 is getting closer to its November release, with Rockstar Games steadily turning up the marketing for what is expected to be the biggest launch in gaming maybe ever, and to some degree that anticipation has influenced a recent WWE trademark attempt. All in all, the return to Vice City has already given Rockstar plenty to work with, particularly as the fictional city draws heavily from Miami and its surrounding areas.

Rockstar has also been giving fans more reasons to look at Vice City beyond the game’s trailers and screenshots, with the company’s marketing increasingly putting the setting itself front and center. For example, there has been developing signage in Miami for the upcoming open-world crime game welcoming folks to “Vice City.” As GTA 6 approaches its November 19 release date, the relationship between the game’s fictional Miami and the real city has become increasingly difficult to ignore, especially with more promotional material expected as launch approaches.

WWE Abandons Vice City Trademark

The growing GTA 6 marketing push has also created some unexpected connections around the Vice City name. WWE previously applied to trademark “Vice City” for use in professional wrestling and sports entertainment, but the company has now abandoned that application. Said application included a full detailed list of the trademark applying to sports entertainment, not gaming, but obviously fans of GTA 6 may see Vice City in WWE and think of the game (despite Miami also being associated with superstar Lola Vice).

The original WWE filing, submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office in August, covered uses including wrestling performances, broadcasts, websites, fan club services, and other entertainment-related activities. The timing drew attention because WWE’s Lola Vice is billed from Miami, Florida, and has incorporated the Vice City moniker into her presentation, while GTA 6 is preparing to return players to its own fictional version of Miami.

Fightful reports that WWE submitted an express abandonment of the trademark application on September 2, with the USPTO processing the abandonment on September 21. No reason for the decision has been publicly given, meaning it remains unclear why WWE chose to walk away from the filing, but it’s clear because of the importance of Vice City. There is also a potentially notable connection with 2K, as Take-Two Interactive owns both Rockstar Games and 2K, which publishes WWE’s games, but there is currently no evidence that 2K or Take-Two played any role in WWE abandoning the application.

The situation ultimately leaves GTA 6‘s Vice City untouched while WWE continues using Lola Vice’s name and Miami-based presentation. With GTA 6‘s release date approaching and Rockstar’s marketing campaign expected to keep growing, the Vice City name will likely become even more prominent as the game gets closer to launch.
