Xbox Game Pass has confirmed another day-one addition for November 5, with Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School, a new open-world escape-room co-op game. Subscribers to Xbox Game Pass will find that Coin Crew Games’ upcoming puzzle adventure is something considerably different from the shooters and RPGs that have dominated many of the service’s recent releases.
Game Pass has had quite a busy stretch of day-one launches this fall, ranging from major first-party releases like Gears of War: E-Day to much smaller games like Echo Weaver that can be easier to overlook in a crowded release calendar. That variety has long been one of the service’s biggest strengths, giving subscribers an excuse to try something they might not have otherwise purchased outright. Its November 5 addition fits squarely into that category, taking a well-liked co-op puzzle series and considerably expanding its original formula.
Escape Academy 2 Is Coming to Xbox Game Pass on Day One
Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School launches November 5 for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PS5, with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers able to play it on day one. Rather than simply offering another collection of isolated escape rooms, Coin Crew Games decided to turn the sequel into a fully explorable campus filled with hidden passages, tunnels, traps, side quests, secrets, and characters to meet between its more traditional puzzles. The developers even call it the “first open-world escape-room game,” making it a particularly unique addition to next month’s lineup. Players can also play through the entire game either solo or with another player via online co-op or local split-screen, and a new No-Timer Mode lets them solve puzzles without worrying about the clock.
The original Escape Academy seems to have given that larger sequel a pretty solid foundation to build on. Released in 2022, the first game was praised for translating the feel of a real escape room into a video game, particularly when played with a friend, and has since attracted more than four million players, according to publisher iam8bit. However, its biggest limitations were easy to spot, with some players finding the experience short and wishing there was more to do between its carefully constructed rooms. Back 2 School seems designed to address that, turning the spaces between its puzzles into part of the experience rather than simply moving players from one challenge to another.
That could also make Escape Academy 2 an especially natural fit for Xbox Game Pass. Puzzle games can sometimes be a harder sell for players unsure how much they’ll enjoy the genre, while co-op games often work best when one player can give another a Friend Pass, or no one has to buy the full game at all if it is on a service. Game Pass removes much of that friction for subscribers, and local split-screen gives the sequel another option that has become increasingly uncommon in modern releases. For subscribers who like the idea of co-op but don’t necessarily want another massive RPG, shooter, or survival game, Escape Academy 2 could end up being one of November’s easiest recommendations.
That smaller scale is also part of why these smaller Xbox Game Pass day-one additions continue to matter for the service even when they aren’t headline AAA releases. A sequel like Escape Academy 2 launching directly into the service puts it in front of a much larger potential audience, even as fall’s biggest releases hit. With an open campus, full co-op support, and a proven puzzle formula underneath it, Back 2 School has a good chance of being the kind of Game Pass release subscribers download on a whim and unexpectedly spend a weekend working through with a friend.
