If a recent report is to be believed, then Xbox Game Pass could be about to undergo a major overhaul. This overhaul will reportedly see Xbox Game Pass offering an ‘à la carte’ system to subscribers, whereby they’ll be able to pick and choose certain features they’d like to add or remove to their subscription.

Xbox Game Pass has experienced a lot of changes since its 2017 debut, but some of the most important have come within the last 12 months. Last October, Xbox announced a major price hike for all of its Game Pass subscription tiers. This price hike was then reversed in April of this year, though it came with the caveat that new Call of Duty releases would no longer come to Game Pass day one. More recently, Xbox announced some big changes coming to Xbox Game Pass’ Cloud gaming feature in November. But all of those changes could pale in comparison to what Xbox allegedly has planned next.

Xbox Game Pass Could be Adopting an ‘À la carte’ System

Fortune has just published a report detailing Asha Sharma’s first few months as Xbox’s CEO, the decisions she’s made so far, and the next steps the company is taking. According to Fortune, one of those next steps is a “major overhaul” of Xbox Game Pass, one that will see it transition into an “à la carte” model, where players will allegedly pick and choose from a list of features such as cloud gaming, add-ons for console games, and multiplayer functionality. Choosing more or certain features will presumably result in a more expensive subscription fee.

Rumors of this à la carte system first surfaced back in April. In a report from Windows Central’s Jez Corden, it was claimed that the long-term goal of Xbox Game Pass, at that time, was to make it more flexible in general. This would include a “pick your own plan” formula, where players could remove features like Fortnite Crew and cloud gaming to make their Game Pass subscription cheaper. Additionally, users would reportedly be able to add new features to their Game Pass subscription as well, such as a monthly World of Warcraft subscription or even potentially a Netflix subscription.

Of course, though Fortune’s report includes testimony from Asha Sharma herself, these Xbox Game Pass plans are still unconfirmed by the CEO and any other Microsoft representative. At the moment, this Xbox Game Pass overhaul is still nothing more than a rumor, and all rumors should always be taken with a hefty pinch of salt.

Interestingly, immediately following its claim that a major Xbox Game Pass overhaul is on the way, Fortune’s recent report claims that Sharma also plans to release a “next-generation handheld device” by the 2027 holiday season. It also claims that Xbox’s next mainline console is currently set to release by holiday 2028.
