To celebrate the launch of Xbox console exclusive Gears of War: E-Day, Microsoft is releasing two gorgeous limited-edition controllers based on the game. While one of them, the Xbox Design Lab variant, will become purchasable on September 30, pre-orders begin today (August 12) for the non-customizable version.
The Limited Edition Gears of War: E-Day Xbox controller leaked a week ago, and while the “Storm King” name used in the report is nowhere to be seen, the design matches the description. It features 3D-molded, red glowing cracks that surround the franchise’s iconic Crimson Omen logo, and the blacked-out ABXY buttons confirm it’s a controller for proper Xbox fans who never need to double-check which button is which. And if that wasn’t enough, a metallic silver COG tag on the battery door brings the design together.
Per the Microsoft website, this E-Hole-themed controller will cost players $89.99, which was expected given the price of other Limited Edition accessories like those for Forza Horizon 6.
Gears of War E-Day’s Limited Edition Controller is Just One of a Pair
While the main limited controller is downright gorgeous — its red triggers, transparent D-pad, and a red X button allow the design to really flow together nicely — players who favor customization can look toward the Design Lab variant. The design for the customizable Xbox controller is illustrated by known heavy metal artist Luke Preece, who has worked with multiple bands in that scene to produce memorable designs. It’s appropriately hardcore for the Gears series too, though noticeably different from the other controller, as its color scheme is grey and ashy.
The design features a large skull in the center of the controller, with a red Xbox button embedded in its forehead. Behind this skull are a pair of crossed Lancers, the franchise’s iconic gun/chainsaw hybrid weapon that players have been using to decimate Locust foes for years. Two more skulls make up the backdrop, wrapping around the handles slightly. Unlike the other Limited Edition controller, the ABXY buttons are visible by default, boasting a white color. However, as is expected with Design Lab controllers, these buttons can be customized, as can the triggers and D-pad. A personalized engraving and custom grips will also be available to add.

Pre-orders may not be available for the Xbox Design Lab variant today, but it will go live when the main controller is released on September 30 — a week before the new Gears of War game launches on October 6. This gives fans of the series a bit of time to snag their ideal controller so that they can break it in with E-Day, either through its promising multiplayer content or prequel story mode. These controllers will be displayed at Gamescom 2026, with the Xbox booth offering a playable demo for the campaign. Additionally, per VGchartz, a themed 8bitDo Charging Dock will be released that matches these controllers.
With the Gears of War 4 Xbox One controller being fondly remembered for its red and black aesthetic, and E-Day delivering another gorgeous-looking design, it’s safe to say that the brand and standout controller designs go hand-in-hand. And given how PlayStation’s Marvel’s Wolverine accessories look gorgeous as well, console gamers are getting access to awesome designs across the board this Fall.
