As players count down the days until the launch of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book on the Switch 2, Nintendo has released a brand-new overview trailer that shows off an exclusive ability never before seen in a Yoshi game and confirms Amiibo compatibility and uses. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book releases on May 21, marking the next major first-party game release for the Nintendo Switch 2 after Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, so it should come as no surprise that audience hype is continuing to build in the lead up to a colorful new adventure starring the beloved green dinosaur.
The initial reveal trailer for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book introduced audiences to an adorable hand-drawn storybook world in which Yoshi will learn about unique creatures and utilize their various abilities to explore vibrant levels while working to complete the missing pages within the titular mysterious book, Mr. E. At first glance, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book bears many similarities to older Yoshi game releases, but Nintendo has now given players an early sneak peek at some of the new gameplay mechanics and extra features coming in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book Gameplay Mechanics and Amiibo Features
For the first time ever, Yoshi will have a new Tail Flick move in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, reminiscent of the same move performed by Mario after collecting a Tanooki Leaf, and it will allow Yoshi to pick up and carry creatures on his back. Some of these creatures will unlock abilities that will help Yoshi to traverse through each level and world, making the Tail Flick a vital new ability that will play a key role in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Of course, Yoshi will retain his typical gameplay mechanics, including eating enemies and certain consumable items, producing eggs that can be thrown at the environment, flutter jumping to navigate gaps, and using a ground pound to destroy obstacles. Additional previously confirmed gameplay features in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book include using an umbrella, bubbles, and a surfboard to move around and even fishing with Yoshi.

Another new mechanic confirmed for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is the ability to use certain Yoshi-themed Amiibo to receive a fortune and a quantity of tokens based on how positive the fortune is. These tokens can then be used to predict new “discoveries” within Mr. E’s pages, which will help make it easy to uncover all the hidden abilities and notes in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Players will also be able to collect tokens as they progress through the game, so the Amiibo simply serve as an added bonus rather than a necessity. The compatible Amiibo figures include those based on other Yoshi video games, namely Yoshi’s Crafted World, and the Bowser Jr. Amiibo because he is now confirmed to make an appearance, along with Kamek, in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.
Early previews of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book have applauded the game’s charming art style and general focus on experimentation and exploration, with many noting that the newest Yoshi title has a high degree of replayability compared to some older entries. Only time will tell if Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is able to live up to the growing legacy of its predecessors, but if it can at least meet the expectations of ongoing audience hype, Yoshi and the Myserious Book could be a major win for the Nintendo Switch 2.
