A slick new race car is the latest creation to come from fans of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Known for its simple to learn yet difficult to master crafting mechanic, Tears of the Kingdom encourages players to fit all sorts of items together to see what happens.

One of Link’s new tools in Tears of the Kingdom is a special ability known as Ultrahand that has a myriad of uses, like manipulating objects and sticking them together to build new items, including vehicles. During the game, players gain access to specific mechanical devices and components that they can use to create far more complicated creations. The purpose is to help players find creative ways to solve shrine puzzles in Tears of the Kingdom and to make powerful weapons to defeat bosses, but Zelda fans have taken the open-endedness of the mechanic as a challenge to create some truly wild builds.

Enter Reddit user u/GentleJoh, who created an amazing race car using in-game materials. In a post to r/HyruleEngineers, GentleJoh says that the base design of the car was made with only 19 parts, two shy of the 21-part limit the game gives for player creations. The last two parts appear to be the spoilers on the rear of the car, so once players figure out how to replicate their own rig, they have the option to go with or without those pieces, depending on their taste. But what seems to be most eye-catching is the top of the car connected by a spring, which activates the car once it’s pushed into place. It’s certainly a unique detail, but emblematic of many other Tears of the Kingdom creations.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Inspires Creative Builds

GentleJoh’s fellow Hyrule Engineers seemed to be enthralled with the spring-top design, and some compared the look of the car to the real-life Datsun 240z (minus the spring). Others compared it to the legendary Mach 5 from Speed Racer. Many commenters are hoping for a build guide to make their own cars and perhaps outfit it with the appropriate weaponry.

One of the biggest factors attributing to Tears of the Kingdom‘s replayability seems to be how truly open-ended construction is. Fans may remember the early days of the game’s release when this particular mechanic was put to use by the less constructive, but possibly more therapeutic, purpose of building Tears of the Kingdom Korok torture devices. But since the game released in 2023, players have found all sorts of ways to build a whole host of different things, including trains, tanks and even fireworks displays. While these creations tend to vary in their degree of usefulness toward solving temple puzzles and ultimately saving the day, each contraption feels more of a celebration of ingenuity on the part of Nintendo’s developers and their fans.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the sequel to the beloved open-world adventure, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This installment once again sees Link and Zelda battling to protect Hyrule from falling to Ganondorf. This new adventure takes place in the same land of Hyrule as Breath of the Wild but sees something called the Upheaval, which allows link to travel to Sky Islands, as well as deep into the Depths beneath Hyrule. Players can use special abilities to fuse together weapons, and build items to help them progress through the release.
