007 First Light Reveals James Bond’s Major Villain, and He Already Stacks Up Against The Greats

007 First Light Reveals James Bond’s Major Villain, and He Already Stacks Up Against The Greats

The Game Awards 2025 included a number of surprise announcements for new games and fresh details on highly-anticipated titles, including a first-ever reveal of the major villain set to antagonize a James Bond in 007 First Light. Developed by IO Interactive and offering similar gameplay to the beloved Hitman series, 007 First Light lets players experience the story of a younger Bond, and the latest trailer gives longtime fans of the James Bond franchise a surprising look at the brand-new villain set to put the iconic British spy to the test.

While Ian Flemming’s novels centered on a charming yet cheeky intelligence agent were a hit in their own right, the popularity of James Bond undeniably skyrocketed following the silver screen debut of the character in 1962’s Dr. No. Sean Connery’s portrayal of Bond turned the British agent into a household name, and the James Bond film franchise has since gone on to last decades, with mega stars like Sir Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig all taking up the mantle of the legendary spy. Despite major success at the box office, the James Bond video games have received somewhat mixed reviews over the years, but 007 First Light looks to breathe fresh life into the character and franchise, helped largely by a major shift in the presentation of 007 himself and the introduction of a new villain who can already hold his own against Bond’s greatest enemies.

James Bond Villain in 007 First Light Compared to Previous Franchise Antagonists

The latest trailer for 007 First Light introduces audiences to first-time Bond villain Bawma, voiced and portrayed by Grammy-winning musician Lenny Kravitz, the ruler of Africa’s biggest black market hub in Aleph, Mauritania. Bawma is shown sitting in the shadows before approaching a captured James Bond, who happens to be suspended over a pit filled with hungry crocodiles. Bawma can be seen sporting animal-print tattoos across his chest and abdomen, complemented by a yellow suit with similar scale-shaped embellishments on the shoulders. He mentions being asked how he hears “every whisper in every corner” of Aleph, and answers that he built the city with his will, blood, and whole self. His taunting tone while monologuing and stylish yet intimidating accommodations instantly hearken back to a number of James Bond’s greatest villains.

Many Bond villains over the years have left their mark on history, with the SPECTRE-leading Blofeld among the most notorious. Bawma seemingly shares several similarities with Blofeld, namely the ability to be informed of any and all goings-on and a taste for pragmatism. The pit of crocodiles conjures up images of Bond running across the reptiles at Dr. Kananga’s farm in Live and Let Die., along with an iconic scene in Skyfall where James falls into a den of Komodo dragons. Bawma’s playful taunting also feels reminiscent of the legendary Goldfinger line, “No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die.” Whether Bawma will drop a similarly icy one-liner remains to be seen, but the brief clip in the trailer already showcases the potential for the new villain to make an infamous name for himself.

The fact that Bawma already measures up against Bond’s most infamous villains, both in terms of dramatic flare and a desire to exert control through chaos that breeds “freedom,” seemingly bodes well for the tension and high-stakes audiences are expecting in 007 First Light. Many are keeping their fingers crossed that 007 First Light will live up to the legacy of the films, while also introducing fresh ideas through gameplay, a new version of James Bond himself, and the delightfully devilish Bawma as a welcome addition to 007’s catalog of enemies. 007 First Light launches for PC, PlayStation 5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S on March 27, 2026.
