A new report indicates that, other than the released Marathon and Destiny: Rising, only one other Bungie game survived the studio’s issues, and it’s not Destiny 3. Destiny 2 received its final update on June 9, after Bungie announced on May 21, 2026, that it would stop making updates and new content for the game. Sony purchased the studio for $3.6 billion to bolster its live-service production, but things went wrong, and Bungie is now in serious trouble.
Destiny 2 has roughly 10 times the player numbers of Marathon despite being left in maintenance mode without a dedicated team or resources, to the point that hotfixes are not always possible. Marathon is still being publicly supported by Sony, though its player numbers plummeted, and Season 3 could be a make-or-break moment for the extraction shooter to attract new players or entice veterans to return. Still, Bungie as a whole has an uncertain future ahead, as the company faced hundreds of layoffs on June 25 and could be at risk of shutting down if no significant progress is made with Marathon or possible incubation projects approved by Sony.
Bungie Had Five or Six Games in Development With No Destiny 3, Only Project Gummy Bears Survived
Games industry reporter Jason Schreier shared a new video recently to talk about Sony’s disastrous live-service initiative that led to multiple studios shutting down or wasting time and money on canceled titles, including Bungie. According to Schreier, Bungie had up to five or six games in the works at some point, and Destiny 3 was never actively being made. Of those, only one game survived Bungie’s restructuring and cancelations, and that’s the MOBA-like game with arena fighter elements called Project Gummy Bears. The only reason it made it through is that it was moved to Sony’s teamLFG instead of remaining a Bungie project. Likewise, Destiny: Rising was released, but it was a NetEase game in collaboration with Bungie. Thus, the only game that Bungie managed to publish is Marathon, which is also at risk of shutting down.

Jason Schreier didn’t share a full list of names for the projects Bungie was working on, but based on previous reports, these most likely included several now-canceled games and others that may have never been made public. It’s unclear if any of the games mentioned by Schreier are currently among Bungie’s incubation projects waiting to be greenlit by Sony after Destiny 2‘s Monument of Triumph final update. The games that were reportedly being made at Bungie are:
- Destiny: Rising — A collaboration with NetEase, which published the game in 2025, so no full control by Bungie or Sony.
- Destiny PvP game — Reportedly, a Destiny game with a 3v3 PvP focus. Presumably canceled.
- Destiny Sunspot — A Destiny spin-off that was reportedly canceled sometime in 2023, after Sony’s acquisition.
- Marathon — Released earlier this year.
- Project Gummy Bears — The only surviving Bungie game other than Marathon, currently being developed by teamLFG within Sony.
- Project Payback — A third-person Destiny spin-off that was also reportedly canceled in 2024.
While it happened before the acquisition, Bungie also canceled a game called Matter. It’s also been reported that Sony doesn’t want to bet on a Destiny 3 because it would presumably cost around $500 million, and it’s not a safe project after the massive loss that came with acquiring Bungie. Yet, the official Destiny 3 petition got over 400,000 signatures.
Content creators are leaving the franchise behind now, months after the final update, as there is no sign it will come back at all, and if it does, it might take six or seven years at the very least. Datto officially retired from Destiny 2 on August 18, and other prominent creators are now looking for other avenues, such as Palworld, The Division 2, and other games.
