2 Classic Resident Evil Games Are Now Playable For Free

Two classic Resident Evil games are now available to play for free in web browsers, with Outbreak and File #2 fully playable and with their original multiplayer functionality intact. Resident Evil fans now have an unexpectedly easy way to revisit a pair of games that Capcom has never rereleased on modern platforms.

Browser-based ports have become one of 2026’s biggest gaming trends, with older console releases increasingly escaping the hardware they were designed around through recompilation, WebGPU, and other modern tools. AI-assisted coding has also controversially helped accelerate some recent projects, though that connection seems murkier here. As the project has picked up steam, players have increasingly questioned whether AI was used to build this particular browser port, but its developer hasn’t publicly clarified the matter, and no source code is currently available to verify those claims. Regardless of how it was made, loading a complete PS2-era multiplayer game in a regular browser tab is a reality that would have sounded fairly absurd not long ago.

Every Resident Evil Game, Ranked From Shortest To Longest

Want to know which is the longest Resident Evil game? Well, let’s go through all the games in the series, from RE to Requiem.

Resident Evil Outbreak and File #2 Are Playable Online

Resident Evil Outbreak and Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2 are now playable in web browsers through the unofficial Outbreakweb project website. The games appear mostly complete, with players able to access all five scenarios from each game, play alone or online with friends, use a controller, adjust the resolution, and save progress to a virtual memory card stored in the browser. No conventional installation is required, and players can even create public or private multiplayer rooms much like on PS2. RE Outbreak originally supported groups of up to four survivors, with eight selectable Raccoon City civilians, each offering unique abilities and play styles, and it can be quite surreal to see that experience preserved in a simple web browser.

However, that multiplayer focus is a big part of why Resident Evil Outbreak has developed such a cult following. Released in 2003, the series essentially attempted four-player cooperative survival horror well before console online gaming was widespread. Instead of controlling established franchise heroes like Leon or Jill, players controlled ordinary people trying to survive different corners of the Raccoon City outbreak while sharing limited resources and facing a steadily worsening infection.

How long this particular resurrection remains available is another matter. Outbreakweb openly describes itself as an unofficial preservation project unaffiliated with Capcom, and unlike projects that simply provide tools for users to convert their own game files, the site currently lets visitors load the games directly. Capcom hasn’t publicly taken action against it, but its unofficial nature means there is no guarantee the site will remain available indefinitely.

Recent developments in the Resident Evil franchise have also made Outbreak particularly relevant once again. Capcom still hasn’t announced a remaster or remake of either game, but Requiem has quietly renewed interest in this corner of the franchise, with returning Outbreak characters making big appearances. For now, Capcom hasn’t announced a remake or remaster of either game, and Resident Evil Requiem producer Masato Kumazawa previously said there were no current plans to make another game like Outbreak, although he personally expressed interest in revisiting it if enough players wanted one. Until Capcom decides whether it deserves an official second chance, fans now have a remarkably simple way to see why these two strange multiplayer experiments have survived for more than 20 years.
