23 Years Later, A Brand-New Hunter: The Reckoning Game Was Just Announced

A long-dormant franchise is making an unexpected return to Xbox, as Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish was officially revealed during the March 2026 Xbox Partner Preview. The announcement marks the first new entry in the series based on the popular tabletop game of the same name in more than two decades. While early details are still sparse, the game looks to have a darker, more grounded take on the series’ supernatural premise and bring deeper RPG elements to the Xbox partner title.

Teyon, the developer behind RoboCop: Rogue City, is bringing the World of Darkness to modern consoles. The original Hunter: The Reckoning games were released in 2003 and featured third-person, hack-and-slash, monster-slaying combat. Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish looks to be going in a different direction, instead shifting the game into first-person action. This latest title will also reboot the franchise and will have no relation to the previous titles released in the early 2000s. Teyon has already proved it knows how to handle a cult classic revival with its well-received RoboCop: Rogue City series.

Dispatch is Finally Coming to Xbox

Months after it’s initial launch on PC and PS5, AdHoc Studio revealed that Dispatch is finally arriving on Xbox consoles in the coming months.

A Gritty Return to the World of Darkness

Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish was officially revealed on March 26 during Xbox’s Partner Preview showcase. The trailer didn’t provide too many details, other than showing that players would take control of hunters tasked with tracking and slaying monsters in modern New York City. The trailer showed off the game’s updated visuals and new first-person perspective, and offered a look at one of the monsters players will face off against – a police officer turned vampire. While Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish is still a ways away, Xbox has confirmed that the game is targeting a Summer 2027 release window. The game will launch on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It’s not the only surprise reveal Xbox announced during its partner preview showcase, either. During the showcase, it was also announced that Super Meat Boy 3D will be available on Xbox Game Pass when it releases on March 31.

The Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish reveal trailer also shows off various settings outside of New York City. The different settings include a cabin in the woods, a dreary-looking graveyard, a bloodied and trashed bar, and a dank, industrial basement.

Following the game’s reveal, Microsoft also released an interview with Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish’s game director, Piotr Łatocha, who provided additional details about the upcoming game. Among other details, he revealed that the game would feature a semi-open world with a linear story that has various endings based on player choice. There will also be side quests to tackle and some romance options to engage with. Łatocha said players will be able to create their own character through a “really complex” character creation tool. He named several of the game’s inspirations, including the CW’s Supernatural TV series, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines.

Łatocha also said there are numerous people on the development team that are familiar with the World of Darkness‘ universe lore, though he himself hasn’t played the tabletop games. The upcoming title will be based on the new 5th edition of Hunter: The Reckoning. That means players will be part of a Cell – a group of hunters that team up to fight stronger enemies. Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish will feature dice roll skill checks similar to Baldur’s Gate 3 and feature an advantage and flaw system.

For a series that has been quiet for over 20 years, Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish represents a significant revival. While other World of Darkness games like Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2 weren’t exactly well-received, the universe still seems ripe for video game adaptations. Rather than simply recreating what came before, Teyon is rebooting the series with a new perspective that leans more into immersion and the World of Darkness’ tenebrous, macabre tone.
