Squad is a first-person tactical shooter that has been available on PC since 2015, but it is now also playable on PlayStation 5 through a time-limited free alpha preview. At the time of writing, the game has over 80% positive reviews on Steam and a rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars on the PlayStation Store. Squad is planned for full release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, but no specific release date has been announced.
In terms of gameplay, Squad is comparable to realistic war games like War Dogs and Arma. It pits 100 players against each other in 50-versus-50 matches across maps inspired by real-life locations. Squad also features several game modes, including options that involve capturing strategic territory before rival factions or invading enemy-controlled areas of the map.
Squad Releases Free Alpha Preview on the PS5
As of October 16, players can download and play Squad for free on PS5. The offer ends on October 25, after which players will have to wait for the game’s full release on the console or another free playtest. The PS5 version of Squad will launch with four game modes, six maps, and eight factions, but developer Offworld plans to add more content in the future. The release date and price have yet to be confirmed, but it’s worth noting that Squad costs $39.99 on Steam.

Performance-wise, Squad targets 4K resolution at 60 FPS on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. Players who want to play with friends on PC or Xbox can also enable crossplay and join designated lobbies. Cross-platform play is entirely optional, so fans of tactical shooter games who prefer to play only with other PS5 users can disable the feature.

Players looking for a realistic co-op PvE FPS can also consider Squad. The game offers a DLC called Fireteam that adds a five-player co-op mode in which players face AI-controlled enemies. Fireteam is included among the four game modes available in the PS5 free alpha preview, meaning console players can invite friends to experience it right now.
Developer Offworld hopes to attract more players to Squad by bringing the game to PlayStation and Xbox. “Expanding Squad to console gives us the opportunity to grow the Squad community and invest more into the game across all platforms, including PC,” the team said. Player reception appears positive at the time of writing, with the game’s preview on the PS Store receiving very positive ratings. However, it remains to be seen how well Squad will perform as a full-priced release on consoles.
While Squad‘s alpha preview is free to play on PS5, it still requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription because it is an online first-person shooter.
