Metro Redux, the post-apocalyptic FPS that has 4.6 out of 5 stars on PS4, has announced a next-gen update that will bring it to PlayStation 5 with several new improvements. Metro Redux is a remastered bundle of the first two installments, Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. So, PlayStation 5 is essentially getting two solid FPS games with great user reviews.
The new release marks a new milestone for the Metro franchise. Developer 4A Games recently said, “We have officially sold 50 million copies of Metro games across the globe.” The current next-gen upgrade, therefore, serves as a thank-you note to the fans who helped drive the game’s success, and existing owners will receive it for free.

Developer 4A Games plans to release the next-gen Metro Redux upgrade on October 29. The PS4 edition of Metro Redux currently costs $29.99 USD, and PS5 users will pay the same price, while existing owners will receive the next-gen update as a free download. Metro Redux‘s PS5 edition will support 4K at 60 FPS, as well as upscaled 4K resolution at 120 FPS on supported displays. The upgraded game will also support PSSR on the PlayStation 5 Pro, which can improve the visuals even further. Metro Redux‘s gameplay will also benefit from DualSense Adaptive Triggers.

Metro Redux’s Next-Gen Features on the PS5 and PS5 Pro
- (NEW) PSSR support on PlayStation 5 Pro
- (NEW) 4K at 60 FPS and upscaled 4K at 120 FPS
- (NEW) Higher quality lighting, shadows, and particle effects
- (NEW) Support for Adaptive Triggers for DualSense controllers

PS5 owners will be able to purchase each game in the bundle separately and still receive the next-gen upgrade. However, the Metro Redux compilation seems to offer a better way to experience the games for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the bundle costs about $10 USD less than buying both games separately. Secondly, Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light are connected in terms of story, and players can best experience them back-to-back. Last Light takes place one year after the events of Metro 2033 and expands on the story and some gameplay mechanics.
Despite its 2014 release, Metro Redux is one of those FPS games that still hold up to modern standards. Interestingly, developer 4A Games used the Redux editions to bring some of the fan-favorite QoL features from Last Light into its predecessor, Metro 2033. For example, both games have the same UI and share mechanics like wiping the mask. However, Metro 2033 Redux received the more noticeable upgrade because 4A Games rebuilt it with its enhanced in-house engine, giving it much better visuals and lighting than the initial release.
It follows that now is the best time to play the older Metro games. The latest installment in the franchise, Metro 2039, is set to release on February 4, 2027. Players who are new to the franchise can use Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light as a starting point to familiarize themselves with the game’s atmosphere. Those who have already played these titles, on the other hand, should take advantage of the free next-gen upgrade and brush up on their skills before Metro 2039 officially releases.
