4 Square Enix Games Are Permanently Shutting Down

4 Square Enix Games Are Permanently Shutting Down

Square Enix has already delisted and announced the shutdown date for four Kingdom Hearts games, with the clear intent of repackaging and selling them back to Nintendo Switch players at a discount. In other words, many players are being asked to purchase these Kingdom Hearts games twice on this platform, essentially.

What shouldn’t be lost on anyone is that this announcement took place in the same week as the latest Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer. At the latest Nintendo Direct, Kingdom Hearts 4 was confirmed to release on Nintendo Switch 2 alongside a new trailer showing off the combat. It showed Sora fighting even more Heartless, other than the giant one that has appeared in every glimpse so far, and some fans are hoping the trailer means KH4 releases in 2027. It’s uncertain if that holds, but what is true is that four specific versions of Kingdom Hearts games will not be playable after June 9, 2027.

Possible Kingdom Hearts 4 Worlds Leaked

A list claiming to reveal the worlds that will be featured in the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 4 appears online.

Square Enix Shutting Down 4 Kingdom Hearts Games, Making You Buy Again

  • Kingdom Hearts – HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX Cloud Version for Switch devices
  • Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue Cloud Version for Switch devices
  • Kingdom Hearts 3 + ReMind DLC Cloud Version for Switch devices
  • Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece Cloud Version for Switch devices

    • Each game has been delisted as of this writing
    • They will permanently shut down on June 9, 2027, at 7:59 AM PT/10:59 AM ET
    • You can purchase new versions of the same game at a discount

On Square Enix’s official support page, it announced the immediate delisting of the Nintendo Switch Cloud Versions of Kingdom Hearts – HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, Kingdom Hearts 3 + ReMind DLC, and Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece. They can no longer be purchased on the platform, as of this writing, but they will remain playable until June 9, 2027, at 7:59 AM PT/10:59 AM ET. At that time, none of these Cloud Versions will be playable anymore. It’s worth noting that each of these games launched at $40-50, with Integrum Masterpiece being a higher-priced collection of Kingdom Hearts games.

While some can argue it was inevitable because they were Cloud Versions, that was never explicitly stated in any clear, up-front way for the layperson or consumer. Marketing focused on the games being available “via cloud” and requiring an internet connection, which requires a little more than common knowledge to understand the risk thereof. Even then, it’s only been four years. The fact remains: Square Enix has delisted and is shutting down four single-player games, while oftentimes it is multiplayer servers or multiplayer games that are shut down. Rubbing salt in the wound is that these Cloud Versions are being replaced with proper Switch versions, which appears to be the reason for the delisting. Anyone who purchased any of these Cloud Versions can buy the same game, with a proper Switch version, at a discount.

The Kingdom Hearts Collection releases on Nintendo Switch 2 in October and can be pre-ordered on the platform now, which includes native Nintendo Switch and/or Nintendo Switch 2 versions of every game listed above: Kingdom Hearts – HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, Kingdom Hearts 3 + ReMind DLC, and the Kingdom Hearts Collection (the new title for Integrum Masterpiece). Only digital purchases qualify for the discount, not the physical version of the full Collection, and Square Enix did not detail how much the discount is or how to claim it in this announcement.

Kingdom Hearts fans will be able to transfer save data from the Cloud version to digital versions, so at least that is not lost. But the fact remains: a fan somewhere in the world is going to miss this announcement, enjoy their Cloud version until the shutdown date, have no idea about it until it happens, and then be forced to purchase the game for a second time on their Switch hardware.
