As proven by the importance of the Stop Killing Games movement, your favorite online shooter might not be around forever. Some of the greatest FPS games ever have had their servers shut down, with the publisher effectively sentencing them to death. Fortunately, at least on PC, the community tends to pick up the slack and launch unofficial servers, which is the only reason we can play games like 10Six, Chromehounds, Global Agenda, and Infantry Online in 2026. Sadly, a few legendary FPS games slipped through this safety net, relegating them to fond memories that echo their once accessible glory.

Let’s take a trip through history to remember those fallen games that once stood at the forefront of gaming, even if their time in the spotlight proved to be brief. Their names are still invoked on Reddit, Twitter, and articles like these, hopefully ensuring that they are never truly forgotten. Who knows? Maybe one day they will return in some form or another.

“Legendary” is not a synonym for “great.” If the feature image didn’t give it away already, the reason I included this disclaimer will become apparent in due time.

MAG

The Best Large-Scale FPS MMO On Consoles Has Been Dead Since 2014

MAG

5/10

Released

January 26, 2010

Nowadays, proper console exclusives are relatively rare, particularly when it comes to online-only games. However, that wasn’t the case in 2010 when MAG launched exclusively on the PS3. An ambitious MMO that broke through the limits of the console shooter multiplayer scene by featuring 256-player lobbies, Zipper Interactive’s masterpiece didn’t take long to become one of the PS3’s defining games. Blending epic faction warfare with squad-based action, MAG delivered a manageable sense of scale that allowed players to focus on easy-to-grasp objectives while simultaneously making their contributions feel important to the greater flow of battle. You could even be promoted to leadership roles that alter your responsibilities.

Big FPS Game Franchises That Are Officially Done

There was a time when the FPS reigned supreme and these franchises were at the top of the world, but today, they’re all but dead and buried.

Although efforts have been made to create community servers, as of May 2026, MAG is still completely unplayable, and that doesn’t seem likely to change anytime soon. Out of all the unplayable legendary FPS games discussed in this article, this is the one that hurts the most, especially since we arguably haven’t really received a proper replacement. Will Sony bring MAG back? Honestly, I don’t know. Sony has supposedly been prioritizing multiplayer projects, but we haven’t heard anything about a MAG revival.

Evolve

The Asymmetrical Multiplayer Game Before Dead By Daylight

Evolve

7/10

Released

February 10, 2015

Asymmetrical multiplayer games are so common nowadays that new releases barely register, but that wasn’t the case in 2014. Evolve beat Dead by Daylight to the punch by more than a year, and its human hunters vs. massive monster premise would still be fresh today, considering most games go down the “run from horror villain” route. With well-defined specializations for the hunters, Evolve shared plenty in common with traditional first-person shooters, which should have expanded its reach. Along with just being generally cool, the monsters felt different from each other and went through an evolution that gradually saw them transition from hunted to hunter.

Although it stuck around for a reasonably long time, Evolve was instantly handicapped by 2K, with the publisher slapping a $59.99 price tag despite the game launching with just three monsters. Even worse, the aggressive monetization dominated the discourse during the launch period, which instantly put Evolve on the defensive. Despite all this nonsense, the game managed to find an audience, who stuck around until the servers were nuked into oblivion. On PC, you might still be able to play a match if you are willing to jump through a few hoops, but the console version is basically just a training mode at this point.

Overwatch (2016 Original)

T for Teen: Blood, Use of Tobacco, Violence (online interactions not rated)

It might feel like Overwatch is still around since Blizzard dropped the numbering scheme from the sequel and occasionally holds “Overwatch: Classic” events that bring back character loadouts from yesteryear. However, make no mistake about it, the original Overwatch is nothing but a corpse at this point. Even more so than any other FPS game mentioned in this article, this death felt even more cynical than usual, with Blizzard essentially killing the old to make room for the new.

Overwatch was lightning in a bottle, and you cannot recapture the magic of 2016 in 2026. When it came out, the game was an incredibly innovative evolution of multiplayer shooters like Team Fortress 2, with its implementation of MOBA-style heroes who just radiated personality out of every fiber of their being. I am only speaking for myself here – I don’t miss Overwatch but rather playing Overwatch in 2016. Still, the game should be alive.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (Online On Consoles)

The Best Battlefield Game Is A Shell Of What It Used To Be

On December 8, 2023, EA shut down the servers for a bunch of Battlefield games, including Bad Company 2. They were also delisted from digital stores earlier in that year, and they can no longer be purchased. These are hardly the only games that EA has old yellered in the last decade, and they will not be the last.

7 FPS Masterpieces No One Remembers Today

These first-person shooters were and still are incredible, even if nobody really talks about them anymore.

Technically, you can still play Battlefield: Bad Company 2‘s offline single-player, which is definitely worth a run. However, 80% of Battlefield‘s appeal is its multiplayer, and killing that is effectively the same thing as killing the game. The delistment also made it unnecessarily difficult to gain access to the single-player. On PC, fans have put together Project Rome to allow for online matches to still be held, but console players have absolutely no way to play Bad Company 2‘s multiplayer.

Concord

A Legendary Cautionary Tale

Say what you want about Concord and its two-week stumble, but it sure managed to etch its name in gaming history. It has become the definitive example of a poorly thought-out trend-chasing game that enters an oversaturated market without anything new to offer. If Sony didn’t get instant cold feet and instead decided to keep the servers on for a year, Concord would have just become another in a long line of failed multiplayer romps, joining the ranks of Lawbreakers and XDefiant.

However, Concord failed so quickly and publicly that it became legendary. Mission accomplished?
