Xbox Game Pass’s August free games are headlined by Beast of Reincarnation, but is it actually the month’s best new arrival? Well, let’s talk about that.
Even with its fluctuating price, Game Pass still offers some of the best value for money in gaming, and the August lineup might shape up to be a solid example of that. Microsoft has revealed the month’s first wave of free games and announced that Gears of War: E-Day‘s early access open beta begins on August 6. Exciting stuff, but the rest of the month doesn’t actually feature all that many big names.
Focusing on the value they bring to Xbox Game Pass, let’s rank all the new free games based on a few factors: quality, savings, and playtime.
The focus is on new Game Pass games, not titles being added to the Premium tier like Heretic + Hexen, PowerWash Simulator 2, and Grounded 2.

Beast of Reincarnation Is August’s Biggest Day One Game Pass Game

Even if the reviews haven’t been entirely glowing, Beast of Reincarnation is by far the biggest new Game Pass game of August, serving as arguably the only arrival that justifies subscribing for the month. Game Freak’s latest attempt to stretch their legs and move away from Pokemon resulted in the developer’s best side project since 2005’s Drill Dozer, although Beast of Reincarnation enters a fairly oversaturated action RPG market. The game’s somewhat divisive reception arguably makes it an even better fit for Game Pass, as the subscription service removes the risk of investing in a title that might fail to strike a chord with you.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Could Be August’s Best New Game

August’s other big Day One arrival is Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, Asobo Studio’s prequel to A Plague Tale: Requiem. Although the upcoming Game Pass game seems to be something of a departure from the two previous entries, the series has maintained a high level of quality throughout, and A Plague Tale Legacy doesn’t seem to be a smaller-scale spin-off by any stretch of the imagination. Along with introducing a new protagonist and setting, the prequel shifts the focus to melee combat, taking influence from the likes of Ghost of Tsushima and Sekiro.

Date Everything Is The Highest Rated Free Game (So Far)

Except for the fact that it was on sale for roughly $10 earlier in July, Date Everything! is a fantastic addition to Game Pass, even if its niche nature might not appeal to everyone. A sandbox dating sim, Sassy Chap Games’ charming title looks great, oozes charm, and comes packed with content that can easily keep you hooked for longer than the length of an open-world RPG. As implied by the title, you can date “everything,” as objects come with their own stories, personalities, and relationship potential.

Sandustry Enters Game Preview

As Lantto Games has yet to reveal the Early Access price, Sandustry is somewhat hard to rank right now; however, the Steam demo is not only highly regarded, but also comes packed with a surprising amount of content. Coming only to PC Game Pass, the game will be available to subscribers looking for a relaxing exploration and base-building game about turning worlds into automated supply chains.

Cricket 26 Shouldn’t Be Forgotten Either

Another Day One Game Pass game, Cricket 26 will definitely get less attention than Beast of Reincarnation and Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, but that doesn’t mean it holds no value. Although not a critical darling by any stretch of the imagination, the series has been on the upswing, and early previews and reviews for the upcoming title have been relatively positive. Like any sports game, Cricket 26 won’t appeal to a huge chunk of subscribers. For some, it might be the most valuable addition of August; for others, it holds absolutely no value.
