5 Mistakes Rockstar Has Already Made

Assuming no catastrophic failures or major errors on Rockstar’s end, we may soon get our hands on GTA6, and as we close in on the last few months before launch, it is important to recognize the bumpiness of the road to release. Rockstar hasn’t exactly been on a hot streak of good news, and it feels like every other day there is a new announcement about a cancellation or restructuring that puts a blemish on its otherwise golden track record of incredible games and post-launch content.

GTA 6 Marketing Spotted in the Wild

A fan spots an ad for Rockstar Games’ upcoming GTA 6 in an unlikely place ahead of the game’s upcoming summer marketing push.

When it comes to GTA6, the game is guaranteed to have a successful launch, and will likely go down in history as one of the most successful media products of all time. However, as great as the game looks, the development and marketing cycle has had its fair share of mistakes, showing that even the very best aren’t immune from error.

GTA 6’s Pricing

We All Knew The Bank Was Going To Be Broken

Details:

  • $80 standard edition
  • $100 for the ultimate edition

Everyone knew that GTA6 was going to be an expensive game. The market has been trending upwards anyway, and there have already been plenty of $70 and $80 releases, from first-party Nintendo titles to larger IPs looking to scrape just a few more dollars from their hungry fans.

The multiple editions aren’t necessarily a problem, as bonus packs have existed for well over a decade, but my issue lies with the lack of hesitation in the game’s price jump from the previous release. Millions would have bought the game at a lower price, and I do appreciate how much content the game is going to have, but when the company spends most of its time marketing the money-printing online mode, it feels a little bit cruel to force your average gamer to shell out close to $100 for a single game, and still expect them to pay more down the line.

Physical Editions

  • Code-in-the-box philosophy
  • Disc version planned later

Physical media has become a topic of debate that has now entered the mainstream, most notably after PlayStation announced it would have no physical releases as of 2028. But while that terrible news is still a few years off, it seems the wave has already begun with GTA6, which will be launching without disc versions and will only have a physical case with a printed-out code inside.

A Second GTA 6 Release is Basically Confirmed for 2027

Based on everything announced so far, it seems clear that Grand Theft Auto 6 will get a second even more ‘dangerous’ release in 2027.

A disc version is planned for consoles later in the year, but it is worrying to see such an industry icon take the plunge into the digital market with such a firm stance. One issue related to this decision comes from certain regions with different local regulations, like Japan, where if you buy a physical copy, you will have a limited amount of time to redeem it before it expires, unlike a disc, which you and your friends can happily trade and resell at a later date, but ultimately, play whenever you want.

PC Release Date

Setting Back An Entire Market

  • Grand Theft Auto 6 Los Santos Skyline
  • GTA 6 Fans Have Theory About the Game's Wanted System

Details:

  • No PC release date yet
  • Not uncommon but still frustrating

A game like GTA6 takes a long time to develop, and because of how many moving parts there are, it can be hard to nail down an exact release date for all the different versions. Rockstar is no stranger to delays, but this time around, it is hard not to feel a little bit frustrated about the lack of a PC release date, given the amount of time between this and the last game.

Even excluding the delays that pushed the game well over a year past the initial release date, I still find it odd that, in the year 2026, we are still getting separate launch schedules for major platforms like PC. I can understand exclusivity, or handhelds where the optimization needs to be top-notch for the game to function, but this is Rockstar we are talking about, and cutting off a large portion of the community until a later date feels rather disappointing and will kill the hype for many who would rather not buy a whole new device.

Content Gating

In-Game Stores Hidden Behind A Paywall

Details:

  • Standard and ultimate edition differences
  • Content locked is more than just cosmetic

Immersion is a huge part of any open-world game, and for GTA6, it is vital that the environment and the city feel alive and are able to fully capture your attention for dozens of hours on end. One thing that brings the fictional streets to life is the stores and structures that make up the roads and neighborhoods, each with its own unique character and purpose in the context of the game.

However, it is clear that not all the shops are going to have their doors open for everyone, as standard edition players will lose out on everything from clothing stores to tattoo parlors to custom mod shops for their arsenal of cars. It is fine to have certain outfits or skins tucked away in a digital store, but to physically block players from accessing certain locations in this way actively works against the immersion argument and turns the experience into a game of ignoring the constant reminders that you didn’t shell out for the ultimate edition.

GTA Online

What We’ve All Been Waiting For

Details:

  • Singleplayer only at launch
  • GTA Online integration unclear

Perhaps the biggest question on everyone’s minds with the launch of GTA6 is how the online mode will work. The online in GTAV was an enormous success, raking in millions for Rockstar every month and seeing plenty of content drops over the course of a decade to keep players coming back time and time again.

After 13 Years, GTA Online Makes Way for the GTA 6 Era to Finally Begin in Full

GTA Online’s update adds brand-new content to keep players busy while Rockstar shifts its attention to the brand new era of GTA 6.

Last time around, it took two weeks for the multiplayer to release, and even then, the servers struggled to keep up with the influx of players. Interestingly enough, we are yet to hear any word regarding the online features of GTA6, aside from the promise of one month free of GTA+, but when it is literally the main reason most people will be buying the game, it comes off as a little odd that we are still very much in the dark about the specifics.
