5 Upcoming Open-World Games That Sound Too Good To Be True

As we approach the end of the current generation, games are becoming more ambitious and impressive with each passing year. Plenty of titles that started development before or shortly after the arrival of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are finally nearing release. They promise to fully tap into the current-gen hardware’s potential, delivering levels of scope, visuals, freedom, and immersiveness as we have never seen before.

The Biggest Open World Games, Based On The Size Of Their Maps

Open-world games are beloved for their massive maps. Here are some of the biggest open worlds that gamers can explore in the genre.

It’s safe to assume that the next few years will be even more exciting for fans of every genre, open-world included. Some games might still be pretty far off, but they are already shaping up to be incredibly ambitious, combining top-notch visuals with groundbreaking gameplay. Today we are looking at upcoming open-world games that sound like a dream and top the lists of the most anticipated titles for millions of players. Note that just because the games below might look too good to be true, that doesn’t necessarily mean they will live up to the hype and deliver on everything promised — so let’s not set our expectations too high just yet.

Grand Theft Auto 6

Simply In a League of Its Own

Now, there are upcoming ambitious open-world games that sound incredible, and then there’s Grand Theft Auto 6. The game is easily in a league of its own, defined by the studio’s expertise and reputation, its unprecedented budget for the entire entertainment industry, massive scope, years in development, and simply mind-blowing execution across the board (judging by the early trailers alone). If no further delays happen, it’s safe to assume that GTA 6 soon will raise the bar for the entire industry for many years to come, like its predecessors GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Upcoming RDR2 style Western open world games

Upcoming Games Like Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 still stands unmatched, but these upcoming Western open-world games might be worth checking out if you look for a similar feel.

The current levels of hype surrounding GTA 6 are unfathomable, unhealthy even, with the fan community’s hunger for new info constantly producing new theories and speculations about the game based on the smallest hints, like patents. Nevertheless, Rockstar is one of the few modern developers known to be capable of outmatching even the strongest expectations and overdelivering with titles that often look even better at launch than in the early trailers. In any case, it’s better just to stay patient — GTA 6 (and Trailer 3) is coming when it’s ready. Now, the question is: how do you even avoid spoilers for a game that massive?

The Witcher 4

A New Dark Fantasy Saga Begins

The Witcher 4 is yet another upcoming game backed by one of the best open-world titles ever made, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, so expectations are pretty high. While CD Projekt Red has specifically mentioned that it doesn’t aim to surpass its own magnum opus, the ambition for The Witcher 4 is certainly on display. Based on the tech demo alone (as we have yet to see the first gameplay), The Witcher 4 aims to become the definitive fantasy open-world title with a long-lasting legacy. It will open a completely new chapter in the beloved universe and serve as the first part of a gaming trilogy built around Ciri.

8 Best Open-World Games To Play While Waiting For GTA 6

While waiting to pre-order GTA 6 for November 2026, play these open-world games, as they will make sure the months fly by.

The Witcher 4 seemingly aims to continue the studio’s streak of delivering some of the best narratives in the open-world genre, while also tackling new areas like a reactive world and NPCs that feel truly alive. Given that the studio hopefully learned its lesson with Cyberpunk 2077’s launch, The Witcher 4 probably won’t be released too early. With that in mind, the biggest concern for some fans is the switch to Unreal Engine 5, as some of the engine’s notorious issues continue to persist, along with whether Ciri will be as compelling a protagonist as Geralt of Rivia.

Light No Fire

Bold Ambition to Push the Boundaries

While all we’ve got about Light No Fire so far was the reveal trailer, this alone, combined with Hello Games’ reputation from No Man’s Sky, was enough to instantly put the game on the map as one of the most ambitious and anticipated upcoming open-world games. The idea behind Light No Fire is both simple and brilliant: to combine the depth of a role-playing game with the freedom of a survival sandbox — all set on a fantasy planet the size of Earth. I bet the game’s concept is basically the definition of a dream game for millions.

Most Promising Open World Games Coming In Summer 2026

5 Open-World Games Coming In Summer 2026 That Already Deserve Your Attention

This summer is unexpectedly generous for some really promising open-world games, so which of these will you play?

Now, with strong previous experience, the studio seemingly knows what it’s doing here. Yet there are plenty of concerns when it comes to how Light No Fire will end up in practice, especially given that a very small team is currently working on the title. Will the world be as interesting to explore as you’d expect, given its scale? Will the lore and worldbuilding be as rich as teased so that it can really take you on a memorable journey, rather than offering yet another survival/building sandbox? In any case, Light No Fire sounds a bit too good to be true, so fingers crossed that the team’s attempt at creating a truly boundless world won’t end up as its biggest shortcoming.

Assassin’s Creed Hexe

A Breath of Fresh Air for the Series

Undoubtedly, Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe is the most mysterious upcoming open-world game on the list, given that Ubisoft hasn’t even officially revealed the game or its final name yet. All we have are some small glimpses, coupled with rumors, speculations, and leaks. And yet, even this is already enough to make the game the most anticipated in the series in quite a long time. From everything we’ve learned so far, AC Hexe is definitely shaping up as a major shift for the franchise, one that could be a long-awaited breath of fresh air for its fans.

Details About Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced You Probably Missed

Things About Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced You Probably Missed

We already know that Resynced will have all-new visuals, reworked combat, parkour, and stealth, but what else can we expect?

Assassin’s Creed Hexe is described as the darkest entry in the series, set amid the troubled times of the witch trials in the 16th-century Holy Roman Empire (Central Europe). The game has also been teased to feature a much stronger emphasis on narrative than previous entries, bringing the signature Assassin-Templar conflict back into the spotlight. All in all, Ubisoft has promised that AC Hexe is a very different and unique take on the Assassin’s Creed formula compared to the most recent titles like AC Shadows. Based on insider intel, everyone in the company seemingly wants to work on the project, based on how promising it shapes up to be. Of course, given the lack of any real showcase yet, it’s best not to set expectations too high for now.

Project Windless

Exotic in More Than One Way

To me, Project Windless looks almost like the next Crimson Desert, promising an original fantasy open world unlike any other, coupled with truly massive battles we still don’t get too often these days. And that’s not even mentioning the game’s completely unique protagonist, a mighty bird warrior of the Rekon race, slaughtering countless foes with ease for some really strong one-person army fantasy potential. Based on the game’s first trailers, everything from visuals, music, combat, and the world itself is simply top-tier, reflecting Krafton’s heavy bet on the title and making Project Windless one of the most exciting upcoming games in the genre.

To top that off, Project Windless isn’t just something out of the blue: the game’s rich and exotic world is taken straight from the acclaimed Korean fantasy novel The Bird That Drinks Tears, even if the game is set thousands of years before the book. Its original story revolves around the old conflict between the Rekon and Nhaga species. Potentially rich in lore, fictional history, fresh fantasy elements you won’t encounter elsewhere, and fierce, cinematic combat, Project Windless definitely looks quite intriguing, and hopefully, it will deliver on everything promised so far.
