Molokaust is a survival first-person shooter with Resident Evil vibes that PC users can currently get for free, but the offer ends on November 4. Created by solo developer Tomás, Molokaust also has a free playable demo on Steam, which has received 81% positive reviews from PC users at the time of writing.
Molokaust‘s gameplay looks like a blend of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 7. The protagonist is a father searching for his missing wife and daughter in a countryside controlled by Ganado-like cultists. Players will have access to retro weapons, such as old handguns, shotguns, and SMGs, but they will also need to manage a Resident Evil-style inventory to survive.

The solo developer says, “Unfortunately, [Molokaust‘s] launch didn’t reach as many people as I had hoped, and it didn’t get much visibility.” So, this new free-to-keep promotion may be an attempt to bring more attention to the game and get its name out there. The itch.io version is an exclusive edition that initially launched for $10.00 to help support the project. It doesn’t appear to be the full release the developer has in mind, but it still offers enough content to keep fans of survival FPS games engaged for a while.
Molokaust offers a linear experience with some exploration. Its world is full of interactive objects and tools that players must use wisely. It also features familiar mechanics that may remind survival horror fans of the Resident Evil franchise. For example, players can find ammo by breaking boxes or craft it using resources like gunpowder they collect along the way. The game also features enemies like RE4‘s Dr. Salvador, who can tear players apart with their chainsaws.

Players who claim Molokaust for free but still want to support its creator can donate through itch.io or join the game’s Patreon. The developer says, “I’m also offering some really cool perks over on my Patreon, such as early access to exclusive content and even the chance to get your own character into the game.” They have also asked fans of realistic survival horror games to share Molokaust with their friends, so more people can try it and offer feedback.
Molokaust isn’t the only game in the genre that fans can currently claim for free. Recently, another survival FPS called Radiant Exodus dropped its price on Steam, becoming free-to-play for all users. Like Molokaust, Radiant Exodus has received very positive user reviews and could be a perfect pick for a Halloween gaming night.
Molokaust features realistic gore and graphic content that may not be suitable for users of all ages.
