8 Nintendo Switch 2 RPGs Officially Releasing in 2027, Ranked by Anticipation

As a massive fan of the Nintendo Switch 2 and perhaps an even bigger fan of RPGs, I’m already looking forward to what 2027 has to offer in that arena. 2026 has been an incredible year for the console, to the point that I almost forget Xbox and PlayStation exist sometimes. From family-friendly games like Pokemon Pokopia and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort to bigger RPGs like Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the Switch 2 has had a stacked 2026—and, of course, the release of the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake on November 5. However, it looks like 2027 may be an even bigger year for the console when it comes to RPGs, which naturally has fans like me immensely excited.

Now, obviously, some of these games are going to be bigger than others, and my own ranking of the most anticipated Switch 2 RPGs in 2027 would probably look a bit different from this one. So, to keep things as fair as possible, I’m ranking them according to how much anticipation they seem to be generating overall, rather than how excited I personally am to play them. Though, admittedly, it’s difficult to keep my own excitement out of the equation with some of these, especially considering a few of them belong to my favorite RPG franchises of all time.

Team Ninja’s Next Soulslike Has Plenty of Potential

  • Nintendo Switch 2 Release Date: March 4, 2027

Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember is one of two Soulslikes on this list, and while it might not be the most anticipated RPG coming to Switch 2 in 2027, I do think it has the potential to be one of the year’s biggest surprises. The original Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty was released in 2023, and while it certainly had plenty of similarities to other Soulslikes, its emphasis on deflecting attacks rather than simply dodging them helped it feel like a different game altogether. And with Wo Long 2, it looks like Team NINJA has decided to build on that foundation rather than change it entirely, which I think is probably the best thing it could have done.

What’s particularly interesting about Wo Long 2, though, is that its battlefields are apparently going to be much more open this time around, allowing players to approach encounters in different ways. Rather than simply fighting whatever enemies are standing in their way, players will be able to capture strongholds, set traps, and even recruit enemy generals to fight alongside them. I actually like the sound of that quite a bit, as it seems like a good way to make exploration and combat feel more connected to one another. Of course, there’s also the game’s new Insight Skills, which should make its already aggressive combat even more satisfying once players get the hang of it.

Lords of the Fallen 2

A Dark Fantasy Sequel With a Growing Audience

  • Nintendo Switch 2 Release Date: Q1 2027

Speaking of Soulslikes, Lords of the Fallen 2 is another major one coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027, and I actually think it has a pretty good chance of being significantly better than its predecessor. The original Lords of the Fallen launched in 2023 to a fairly mixed reception, but I think one of the best things it had going for it was its dual-realm mechanic. Being able to travel between Axiom, the world of the living, and Umbral, the world of the dead, made exploration feel much more involved than simply wandering around looking for hidden paths. It was an interesting idea, to say the least, and I’m glad to see the sequel isn’t abandoning it.

5 Soulslikes With Better Side Quests Than Elden Ring, Ranked

Nearly everything in Elden Ring is perfect, but side quests are definitely an exception. These Soulslike RPGs do it better than FromSoftware’s game.

In fact, Lords of the Fallen 2 is taking that idea even further, with a much more dangerous Umbral realm, faster combat, more enemy variety, and some pretty brutal new executions. The sequel was originally supposed to launch in 2026, but developer CI Games ultimately decided to push it into the first quarter of 2027 to give it more time in development. And considering how many updates the first game received after launch, I think that’s probably for the best. I also find it interesting that Lords of the Fallen 2 is coming to Switch 2 at all, as the original game never made its way to a Nintendo console. Hopefully, that means CI Games is confident it can get the game running well enough on the hardware.

I’m not at all ashamed to admit that Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is one of my favorite games of all time and what I would consider one of the greatest RPGs ever made. It’s a shame it lost Best RPG to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in 2025, as I consider KCD2 to be the better RPG, even if Expedition 33 is a better game in some ways. I digress, though, because the main point I want to make here is that even though I’ve already poured hundreds of hours into Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 on PC, it’s going to be difficult for me to avoid purchasing it again on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027.

Console in One

Put the consoles in the correct order.

And it’s not just the base game that is coming to the Switch 2 next year. Rather, Switch 2 is getting the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Royal Edition, which includes all major story expansions, additional weapon and armor packs, and a bonus questline. The one thing I am a bit worried about with playing KCD2 on the Switch 2 is its performance. This is a massive open-world RPG with a lot of emergent stuff going on, so it has the potential to push the Switch 2 to its breaking point. I don’t expect it to match the performance of my gaming PC at all, but I’m at least hoping for a stable frame rate and balanced visuals.

Xenoblade Chronicles

  • Nintendo Switch 2 Release Date: TBA 2027

Xenoblade Genesis is another highly anticipated Switch 2 RPG launching in 2027, especially for fans of the series like myself. What makes this one so interesting, though, is that Nintendo isn’t treating it like another numbered entry in the Xenoblade Chronicles series. Rather, Xenoblade Genesis is supposed to mark a new beginning for the franchise, which has me very interested in seeing where Monolith Soft decides to take it. After all, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 effectively brought the original trilogy’s overarching story to an end, so there was always the question of what would come next. And from what we’ve seen of Genesis so far, it looks like we’re in for something pretty different.

The game takes place in a new world where a power known as Anima governs the elements, and warriors called Vesselai can wield that power using special stones called Anima Crystones. There’s also an academy called Leukos that appears to play an important role in the story, but Nintendo hasn’t revealed enough about the game’s actual structure for us to know what to expect from that just yet. Personally, though, I’m much more interested in seeing how Xenoblade Genesis handles exploration, especially with the Switch 2’s more powerful hardware behind it. Monolith Soft has always been exceptionally good at creating massive worlds that make players feel small, and if Genesis can take that even further, I can already see myself losing hundreds of hours to it.

I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to say that Persona 4 is one of the most beloved JRPGs of all time, so it’s really not surprising to see Persona 4 Revival generating so much anticipation ahead of its 2027 release. Like Persona 3 Reload before it, Revival is a full remake of one of Atlus’ classic RPGs, bringing its visuals, combat, and presentation up to modern standards. Of course, there’s a lot more to Persona 4 than its combat, as much of the game revolves around building relationships, attending school, and investigating a series of mysterious murders in the rural Japanese town of Inaba. It’s a pretty unusual combination when you think about it, but that’s also a big part of what has made the Persona franchise so popular over the years.

6 JRPGs With Virtually Perfect Progression Systems, Ranked

These JRPGs prove that character progression and complex skill systems can be just as rewarding as the adventures themselves.

One thing I’m especially glad to see with Persona 4 Revival is that Atlus isn’t simply giving the original game a new coat of paint and calling it a day. It’s also introducing mechanics from newer Persona games, like Baton Pass, alongside new abilities, additional events, and fully voiced Social Links. The only unfortunate thing for Switch 2 owners is that Persona 4 Revival won’t launch on the console until May 20, 2027, a little over three months after its February 18 release on other platforms. That’s a bit disappointing, especially when the Switch 2 seems like such a good place to play an RPG like this, but at least Nintendo fans won’t have to wait too long to get their hands on it.

If I wasn’t trying to be as objective as I possibly could, I’d put Final Fantasy 7 Revelation in the number one spot for this list, as Final Fantasy is by far one of my all-time favorite franchises, and Final Fantasy 7, one of my favorite games. But FF7 Revelation is still a highly anticipated 2027 release for many RPG and Final Fantasy fans, simply because it is effectively concluding the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy that began with the release of FF7 Remake in 2020. While the first two entries have certainly not been universally loved, they are widely considered a massive achievement for Square Enix and one of the most accurate definitions of a true video game remake.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation has a lot of things going for it, from its much larger open world and airship travel to its cast of playable characters and its narrative. It’s also the first entry in the FF7 Remake trilogy to have a day-one cross-platform launch, as its predecessors first arrived on PlayStation consoles before moving to other platforms. And speaking of other platforms, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation‘s Switch 2 day-one launch is precisely the reason it has been included in this list. The only question now is whether it will perform well enough to justify its place on the console.

2

Kingdom Hearts 4

Sora’s Long-Awaited Return Is One of 2027’s Biggest Events

  • Nintendo Switch 2 Release Date: Late 2027

Kingdom Hearts 4 is naturally near the top of this list because KH fans have now been waiting over four years since KH4 was officially announced in April 2022 and over seven years since the series’ last mainline entry launched in 2019. Needless to say, the amount of time from installment to installment and announcement to release is enough to build plenty of anticipation for one of the biggest RPG franchises in video game history. Plus, it seems like Kingdom Hearts 4 is making some major improvements to the series’ formula, and it could even be taking players to worlds they’ve been requesting for years.

November 2026 RPGs Must-play

6 Must-Play RPGs Releasing in November 2026, Ranked

2026 has been a great year for role-playing games, and November is not changing that. If you want a new RPG, check out these games.

One of the biggest reveals for Kingdom Hearts 4 came during D23 2026, when Square Enix confirmed that Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy would all have playable sections in the game. I think that’s actually a pretty big deal, considering how much time those characters have spent accompanying Sora throughout the series without players ever getting to control them in quite the same way. We also finally got confirmation that Coco will be one of the Disney and Pixar worlds featured in Kingdom Hearts 4, and I honestly can’t think of many better choices for the franchise. I’m particularly interested in seeing how the Land of the Dead translates into a playable environment, especially given how visually impressive it was in the film. And with Sora’s story apparently taking a very different direction this time around, there’s plenty more to be excited about beyond the Disney worlds themselves.

Pokemon Winds and Pokemon Waves

A New Pokemon Generation Is as Big as It Gets

  • Pokemon Winds and Waves trainer staring out at roaring wavesImage via The Pokemon Company
  • pokemon winds and waves player characterImage via Nintendo
  • Pokemon Winds and Waves may have the series' biggest region to dateImage via Game Freak

  • Nintendo Switch 2 Release Date: TBA 2027

And obviously, I just had to put Pokemon Winds and Waves in the number one spot, because not only are they the next mainline installments in what is quite possibly the biggest RPG franchise in video game history, but like Kingdom Hearts 4, the gap between Pokemon‘s Generation 9 and Generation 10 games (Winds and Waves) is officially the longest gap the franchise has ever maintained. Once Pokemon Winds and Waves launch in 2027, fans will have waited 5 years for a new mainline Pokemon game, when they’ve traditionally only had to wait for 3 years between installments.

But I think the biggest reason Pokemon Winds and Waves deserve the number one spot is that they’ll be the first entirely new generation of Pokemon games developed exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, which hopefully means Game Freak will finally have the hardware it needs to deliver the kind of experience fans have been asking for. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet were certainly ambitious games, especially with their open-world structure, but their technical problems were difficult to ignore. And while I don’t expect Winds and Waves to suddenly become the most visually impressive games on the Switch 2, I do think it’s reasonable to expect a much more polished experience this time around. The new region already looks beautiful, with its tropical islands and massive ocean, but I’m especially interested in seeing how much freedom players will have to explore it. If Game Freak can make that world feel as alive as it looks, I think Generation 10 could end up being exactly what the franchise needs.
