Author Behind One Of This Season’s Most Popular Anime Bullied Off Of X

Syundei, the author behind the popular BL (Boys’ Love) manga Go For It, Nakamura-kun!!, has deleted her X account after being harassed for including a scene in the manga between a high school student and a teacher that readers perceived as romantic. The scene was included in the latest episode of the manga’s anime adaptation, which just aired yesterday, though the romantic tension aspect had been toned down in the anime version at the artist’s request.

As spotted by Anime News Network (via Automaton), Syundei deleted her X account on April 11, just after posting a lengthy message on the platform (which was machine translated from Japanese and uploaded to Reddit). “I just get complaints about why the hell I’d draw something like this, and I don’t have the ability to create something that makes everyone as happy as they’re expected, so there’s no point in being manga anymore, is there?” reads her last post on X.

However, the episode that users on X supposedly took issue with aired yesterday, so why exactly did she delete her account 11 days before it released? For context, Go For It, Nakamura-kun!! is a BL manga that focuses on the titular character, Okuto Nakamura, a closeted 16-year-old high school student who has a crush on his classmate, Aiki Hirose.

According to Anime News Network, users on X began harassing Syundei soon after the anime adaptation began airing earlier this month, on April 2. This harassment supposedly stemmed from a “what if” piece of artwork by Syundei, not featured in the manga itself, which depicted Hirose fantasizing about his 25-year-old homeroom teacher, Sou Otogiri. Even in the manga, Hirose’s crush on his teacher is depicted as one-sided.

In a statement released by Japanese webcomic imprint HERO’s WEB on X, which was sent to them by Syundei, it was revealed that the author asked the animation team to tone down the suggestive implications between Hirose and Otogiri featured in the manga.

“It was the author who requested things such as: ‘Please depict the relationship between Otkiri and Hirose without getting too close, always keeping in mind that they are in a teacher-student dynamic; avoid any depictions that sexually exploit female students or female characters; and for vulgar elements present in the original work, please refrain from including them in the anime as much as possible and revise them into expressions that anyone can view comfortably,’” reads part of Syundei’s statement (machine translated from Japanese). In the controversial scene, the teacher and student exchange contact information; the statement also clarifies that “the author and the anime production team do not endorse teachers and students exchanging personal contact information.”

Syundei’s statement also noted that the author plans to move away from depicting any form of age-gap romance, implied or otherwise, in her future works.

“Furthermore, the author has previously created several works in the BL genre featuring pairings with a significant age difference or pairings between adults and minors, such as teachers and students,” continues the statement. “However, considering the recent increase in horrific crimes committed by adults against minors, the author will not use this as a theme in the future.”
