New Mario Coffins Will Make Fans Think Twice About Cremation

New Mario Coffins Will Make Fans Think Twice About Cremation

You ever think about how, unlike Mario, humans only have one life and eventually will be consigned back to the earth, never to rise, run, and jump again?

Hey, me too! And I’ve got some great news—whenever you and I happen to descend that eternal Warp Pipe into oblivion, we can do so in style. Mario style. Check this out:

This comes from Bignotto (via Voxel), a Brazilian urn and coffin manufacturer with an…enthusiastic…social media presence that it’s currently using to advertise Mario-themed coffins. They are uncomplicated things: red, green, or pink, with an interchangeable emblem that can be attached to the front to suggest characters like Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, and…Toad, for some reason. Because when my loved one dies I definitely want to be thinking about Toad.

The social media vibes on a company that’s all about death and dying are really throwing me, like in this video showing off the same coffins set to the World 1-2 music with “GAME OVER” splashed across the top:

I’m also enjoying scrolling through this Instagram account and observing that the Mario coffins are just the latest in a string of Bignotto’s efforts to make creative pop culture coffins. That bright pink coffin? It’s previously been used for a Barbie coffin, a Hello Kitty coffin, and in tandem with the green, a pair of Fairly OddParents boxes:

If you’ve ever been the responsible party when a loved one dies, you’ve probably seen the wide array of weirdly themed things you can bury people in, including urns dedicated to specific sports teams, animals, or boxes shaped like a baguette. Silly as all this looks, there’s something really heartening about an approach to death that embraces what was loved during life and has a healthy sense of humor to go with it. Just don’t let Nintendo’s lawyers know where the bodies are buried.
