Phasmophobia Reveals New Details for the Upcoming Player Character Update

Phasmophobia Reveals New Details for the Upcoming Player Character Update

The developers behind ghost-hunting game Phasmophobia have shared some new information and further details about the game’s upcoming Player Character Update. Originally, this update was expected to arrive in 2025, but was pushed back to 2026, and players will be able to customize new character models in Phasmophobia starting on May 5.

Phasmophobia has been undergoing a lot of changes in recent history, and there are many more to come. Thus far, Phasmophobia has introduced reworks of existing maps, new areas to hunt ghosts in, new types of ghosts, and more. All of these efforts are being made in the run-up to the Phasmophobia 1.0 release, when the game will finally exit early access.

New Co-Op Horror Game on Steam is GTFO Meets Phasmophobia on a Doomed Train

Steam has plenty of indie horror games, but this newly released title takes the best of GTFO and Phasmophobia and gives it a chaotic twist.

Phasmophobia Developers Talk Player Character Updates and Game Changes

In a chat with IGN, the developers at Kinetic Games shed a bit more light on what’s coming in the Player Character Update. The team already announced that Phasmophobia players will be able to choose one of 12 characters and customize things like their hair color and outfits, allowing for more individuality and helping to reduce the risk of entering a game with identical-looking characters on a team. However, these aren’t just purely cosmetic, as the team has been taking the character’s motivations and reasons for hunting ghosts in the first place into consideration, adding narrative to the ghost hunters. Some new elements of the character models will be included, like no more floating hands in first-person, and players casting shadows on the surrounding environment.

In addition to getting rid of the classic death room in Phasmophobia, the game will also be introducing brand-new death animations. However, the classic strangulation animation isn’t entirely going away, but has instead been “polished up” to match the new death animations. The team also teased a couple other things, but said they wanted to keep it a secret so that players will be surprised when they actually try it out for themselves. The devs also confirmed that there will be no microtransactions to purchase character customization items. They noted that there could be a time when that might be something the team considers, but for now, they want players to be able to earn everything. Some items will be purchased with in-game currency, while others will be unlocked as players progress through the levels and prestige system.

Another interesting element touched on is that Phasmophobia will gradually be adding more hints about the Ghost Hunting Division that the players are running their missions for. The backstory will be drip-fed over time, but eagle-eyed players may be able to spot details to discover a bit more about the GHD. Although the game has been out for six years, the Ghost Hunting Division has largely remained mysterious, so fans may be curious to learn more.

While the Player Character Update is on the horizon, the game has already revealed more of what’s to come after that. The next big thing will be a Phasmophobia Alan Wake crossover, which will see the worlds of the two games crash into each other. Much about the crossover is being kept under wraps for now, but players won’t have to wait long to learn more, as it will be arriving on May 12.
