Stardew Valley‘s 2D graphics are a big part of the game’s charm, but one fan has created a concept video showing what the game might look like in 3D. Since launching in 2016, Stardew Valley has found a passionate audience, which continues to grow. Developer Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone has spent the last decade polishing the gameplay and adding new features, and that continued support has helped players remain invested.
The love that players have for the game has resulted in many players sharing their own visions of how it could evolve or improve. Sometimes that results in unique concepts and videos, but Stardew Valley has also seen countless fan mods. There’s a culture surrounding Stardew Valley that exceeds what most indie developers could ever dream of.

Stardew Valley Gets the 3D Treatment
In a post on Reddit, user Stretchpixel shared a video of Stardew Valley reimagined in 3D. Harvest Moon saw its own jump to 3D on N64, but unlike that farming sim, this concept for a 3D take on Stardew Valley still maintains the 2D designs that the game is known for. What that means is that everything still looks like it would in the game ConcernedApe created, from the tree designs to the player’s home. However, the video shows some of the improvements players might expect from a 3D game, such as the ability to move the camera to see depth.

On the one hand, this is an incredible video. It further highlights the passion of Stardew Valley fans, while offering an idea of what the game might look like if ConcernedApe ever did want to make a 3D version. However, it also shows why that probably wouldn’t work for most people. A lot of Stardew Valley‘s charm comes from its pixel art designs, and while the concept video maintains the art style everyone loves, the real beauty gets somewhat lost. The mash-up of styles is somewhat disorienting, even if it shows an incredible amount of talent and passion.
Interestingly enough, the 3D concept video showcases Clint as the main character. Stardew Valley update 1.7 will put more focus on Clint, who will become a marriage candidate alongside Sandy. It’s unclear exactly why Stretchpixel chose Clint for this role, or why he’s jumping around Pelican Town in nothing but a pair of underwear, but it has led to some funny reactions from other Reddit posters. One suggested that marrying Clint in update 1.7 will lead to the player taking on the appearance of the blacksmith, but that’s not very likely. In any event, it does make the video even more memorable.

Fans of the game are anxiously awaiting update 1.7, which does not currently have a release date. Stardew Valley‘s future is causing anxiety for some players, as no one really knows how long it will see support. ConcernedApe has been splitting time working on a new game called Haunted Chocolatier, which doesn’t seem to be coming out anytime soon. There’s no reason to believe Stardew Valley is in danger of being abandoned, but new content could take a backseat for a while, following update 1.7. For now, fans will just have to continue to enjoy the current game as they wait for more content.
