Steam Users Have Until May 13 to Claim Space Sim Game Completely Free of Charge

Steam Users Have Until May 13 to Claim Space Sim Game Completely Free of Charge

Steam users have until May 13 to claim a casual space sim about colonizing the Moon, titled Roving Rovers: Australian Rover Challenge 2025, without paying a single dime. It’s no secret that Steam’s library is already packed with free-to-play games, especially among indie releases, but it always feels a bit more appealing when a paid game turns free to claim for a limited time.

In the case of Roving Rovers, things work a bit differently from a typical Steam promotion. Normally, a paid game on Valve’s storefront is made free for a limited time, letting players claim it and keep it forever afterward. With Roving Rovers, it’s the opposite. The game is currently free on Steam but will soon switch to a paid model. That gives space sim fans a short window to add it to their library before it starts costing money.

All the Free Games You Can Claim in May 2026

Starting with Hogwarts Legacy, May 2026’s free games lineup should be incredible, with Prime Gaming, Steam, and Epic Games Store all having giveaways.

Claim Roving Rovers on Steam for Free Before It Becomes a Paid Game

On May 13, 2026, Roving Rovers will receive one of its largest content updates while also transitioning to a $5 USD price tag. According to developer Mini Mammoth Games, Steam users who claim the game before this update will get to keep it permanently at no cost. Even better, they’ll also receive future updates for free, making the offer even more appealing.

As for its gameplay, Roving Rovers is a space sim where players are tasked with building an operational lunar base. To complete this mission, they take control of a realistic lunar rover and explore a map described as an imported scan of the Moon. Alongside the May 13 update, Roving Rovers will receive an expanded campaign, improved voice-over work, and, most notably, support for 4-player local co-op. By claiming it before the expansion arrives, players are essentially adding another Steam co-op game to their library at no cost.

Roving Rovers Recommended PC Requirements

  • OS: Windows 10
  • Processor: Quad core or higher
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 960
  • DirectX: Version 9.0
  • Storage: 4 GB available space

For those looking to learn more about Roving Rovers, the game originally launched in 2023 with support from several universities and organizations, including The Andy Thomas Centre for Space Resources, University of Adelaide, and Flinders University. According to the developer, it is designed to replicate the Australian Rover Challenge (ARCh), an annual event that showcases rover design advancements and tests student-built models. Despite being a small-budget indie Steam game, Roving Rovers delivers a fairly realistic simulation of the Moon, thanks to the expertise of the contributors involved in its development.

PC users looking for more freebies on Steam may be interested to know that Roving Rovers isn’t the only promotion available right now. Until May 11, Steam users can download and play Foundry for free. However, it’s worth noting that this is not a free-to-claim offer, and once the event ends, players will need to purchase the game to keep access. In contrast, Roving Rovers will be permanently added to players’ libraries if claimed before May 13, making it fully playable going forward at no additional cost.
