Saros, Sony’s latest PS5 exclusive, has apparently sold 300,000 copies since its launch in April 2026. If accurate, the figure could suggest the game is struggling to recoup its development costs. Sony has already absorbed a sizable financial setback from Marathon‘s unstable performance, and Saros joining the list of underperforming first-party titles would likely be the last thing on the company’s 2026 agenda.
On May 6, Sony released its official top-download charts for April, suggesting that Saros may be facing early commercial headwinds. The title ranked 11th in the US and Canada and 17th in Europe, placing it well below the position achieved by Returnal during a comparable period following its 2021 release.

Analysts Say Saros Has Generated $22 Million in Revenue So Far
With Saros approaching two weeks on the market, an analysis from Alinea Analytics suggests the PS5 exclusive has sold roughly 300,000 copies despite its reported $76 million development budget, recouping only about 30% of its costs to date. By comparison, sales figures released for Returnal in 2022 indicated the title had sold around 866,000 units, while broader estimates place its lifetime sales at more than one million copies.

Neither Sony nor Housemarque has commented on Saros‘s actual sales, and they are unlikely to do so. It is also worth noting that reports on the game’s performance have been inconsistent. In early May, rumors circulated that Saros had sold four times as many copies as Returnal in its first week. For now, fans should treat all such estimates and analyses cautiously until a verifiable source discloses the game’s true sales figures.
However, if the claim that Saros has sold 300,000 copies proves accurate, several factors may help explain the game’s weaker-than-expected performance. For one, Saros arrived amid a crowded release window that included several highly anticipated games, among them Crimson Desert and Resident Evil Requiem. Its predecessor, Returnal, was one of the first PS5 exclusives to optimize for features such as haptic feedback, while Saros is competing with a broader slate of appealing, and in some cases less expensive, games that also make effective use of the console’s proprietary features.
Still, the PS5 audience is far larger now than it was when Returnal debuted. Rhys Elliott, head of market analysis at Alinea Analytics, said Sony had about 8 million PS5 users in 2021, when Returnal launched, versus more than 90 million today. He argues that Saros should have benefited from that expanded installed base, but has not. Elliott said Sony may eventually turn to promotions and other incentives to lift sales. The company could also bring the game to PC, as it did with Returnal, though no official plans for a Saros port have been announced.
In March 2026, Sony shut down Bluepoint Games, the studio best known for its acclaimed remake of Demon’s Souls. The move has fueled concerns among some fans that Saros‘s reportedly underwhelming sales could place Housemarque at similar risk. Still, fans are advised against drawing premature conclusions, as the available sales figures for Saros are based largely on third-party estimates and analytics tools rather than verified data or official disclosures.
