Fans React To The Unexpected End Of Destiny 2

Destiny 2 will get its final update in June, closing out the latest chapter in Bungie’s long-running sci-fi MMO. For players who have been playing since the original Destiny came to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One back in 2014, it’s hard to believe. Everything ends eventually, but Destiny 2‘s end feels like it came earlier than it needed to.

Many Guardians ended their journeys when Bungie switched from Destiny 1 to Destiny 2 in 2017. Another wave of players were left behind amid the loot shooter’s various stumbles over the ensuing years. Many felt The Final Shape in 2024, which concluded a decade of storytelling, was the right time to part ways with the game. But even if Destiny 2‘s trajectory over the past two years felt increasingly inevitable, it’s no less shocking or sad to see its long, legendary arc finally come to a close.

Many people’s first reaction to the news was something along the lines of “OMG!” followed immediately by “D3 when?”

Holy shit….

I’m so sad to see Destiny 2 go, but imo this very heavily implies that Destiny 3 (or whatever the next chapter is) is in development.

Could be Copium, but I hope it’s not https://t.co/0hekx0v6AL

I’m absolutely numb. I knew Destiny wasn’t going to last forever, but I’m just not ready yet.

I never imagined this day would come.

Pantheon II was the most bittersweet and amazing project of my career.
With all the issues we had during the development process of the artwork, I felt an overwhelming sense of finality and grattitude.

What the fuck are they thinking.

I’m livid.

To kill this game that hundreds of thousands of people are still actively invested in……

I think if it was they’d say so. Seems like the end of Destiny as we know it at least

Full steam on D3 at the “request” of Sony feels very likely here. IMO this shift was a needed and good thing. Looking like the final LIVE update For Destiny 2 in June will be hefty as it sounds to include intended future stuff.

i didn’t actually bungie would wrap it up. but june 9 is the last D2 update. and it has been a hell of a ride. i’ll have a video talking about my thoughts.

Destiny 2 will always have a very special place in my heart, loved that game with a furious passion for a bright and wonderful period of time and met some brilliant people through that shared love :} 💙 and dear goodness did I make a hell of a lot of fan art about it

No. Just no. I’ve got 5000 hours in this game, lifelong friends from it, some enemies, and at Bungie so many friends over the years. This hurts, at least the game being quiet this year has enabled me to work day and night on Control Resonant, but…I’m…

Although I haven’t played Destiny in awhile now it’s still a sad time for me personally. My entire life today is due to the friendships and relationships that formed around Destiny. I’ll always look back fondly on the memories I have with others in Destiny. TY🫶 @DestinyTheGame

OPEN THE CONTENT VAULT YOU HAVE NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE

Awful, awful news. Books can and should be written about the mismanagement of Destiny 2, which I maintain is one of the greatest games ever made, and one which still have vast potential. But it has become utterly impossible to trust Bungie to deliver.https://t.co/sDDaRmLQ8U

Destiny made a mark on me as a player first. Getting a chance to work in that world is an honor I’ll never fully be able to repay. Both in and out of game, Destiny 2 forged the core memories that made me who I am today. Thanks to everyone who brought the tower to life everyday.

Of course, Destiny 2 isn’t technically dying. The servers will remain online even after its final Monument of Triumph content drop goes live in June. Fans can continue to visit all of its planets and grind through all of its raids as much as they want. But it won’t be the same knowing that there’s nothing new coming around the corner. The world won’t feel alive in the same way, even if it’s still there, trapped in amber for as long as Sony decides to keep it available.

In the meantime, I have a feeling a lot of lapsed players will be re-downloading Destiny 2 this weekend and taking a spin on their sparrows for old-time’s sake. Maybe they’ll even see how much they missed while they were away and fall in love with some of the new stories and missions that dropped in their absence. You’ll be able to catch me looking for ghosts in the old Cosmodrome.
