Fable, the upcoming open-world RPG from Xbox Game Studios and Playground Games, has been rated by content boards in South Korea and Australia. Fable has yet to receive an ESRB rating, but given that these two boards handed down similar classifications—both effectively equivalent to a Mature rating—fans should probably expect the ESRB to land in the same ballpark when the time comes.
It is worth noting that these ratings arrive at an interesting point in the game’s marketing. Fable still does not have a firm release date, only a Fall 2026 launch window for PC, PS5, and Xbox platforms. However, with the Xbox Games Showcase scheduled for June 7, there is growing speculation that could soon change. While Gears of War: E-Day is expected to serve as the showcase’s major centerpiece, Fable is arguably one of Xbox’s other biggest upcoming releases, making it a strong candidate for a release date reveal or another substantial gameplay showing. Even if that doesn’t, the timing of these ratings naturally adds fuel to the fire that surrounds the game.
Every Fable Game, Ranked
The Fable reboot should be coming in 2026, but the Xbox game will need to be truly special to surpass Lionhead’s original trilogy.
Fable Gets Content Ratings From South Korea and Australia
The South Korean Ratings Board classified Fable as an 18+ title, which closely lines up with the ESRB’s M for Mature 17+ category. The distinction there is almost certainly not enough to warrant the ESRB’s rare AO (Adults Only Rating). The board specifically cited several reasons for the rating:
- Use of language that directly expresses sexual acts
- Frequent killing, bloodshed, and bodily mutilation using weapons determination
- Direct criminal acts based on user choices
- Excessive use of vulgar language and profanity

The Fable series has always leaned heavily into crude British humor, moral choices, and exaggerated fantasy violence. Sexual innuendo and profanity have been staples of the franchise since the days of the OG Fable and its sequels, while player freedom has often included morally questionable or outright criminal actions depending on how someone chooses to play. In that sense, the new game appears to be staying true to the tone and identity that helped define the series in the first place.
Meanwhile, the Australian Classification Board was much less specific with its reasoning, simply assigning the game an M rating for Violence and Mature Themes. Even so, the result still broadly aligns with South Korea’s classification and points toward a more mature RPG experience overall.
For comparison’s sake, Fable 3 received an ESRB M rating for Blood, Language, Sexual Content, Use of Alcohol, and Violence. Ratings boards do vary from region to region, of course, but taken together, the South Korean rating, the Australian classification, and the franchise’s history all suggest the upcoming Fable will continue the trend with another Mature rating from the ESRB, whenever that announcement finally arrives. The Xbox Games Showcase being right around the corner makes it seem like this will be confirmed sooner rather than later.
