Price Hikes Have People Worried About Valve’s Steam Machine

Price Hikes Have People Worried About Valve’s Steam Machine

Pragmata‘s director would like you to know he’d love to make a sequel, but also doesn’t have the power to decide if one gets made. Count on The Witcher 3‘s Songs of the Past being a very beefy update. And we finally have fresh details on Hollow Knight: Silksong‘s long-awaited physical version. It’s your Kotaku Checkpoint roundup for May 28, 2026, where we are trying to rub those sleep-filled bags out from under our eyes and remember what it was once like to be young and full of dreams.

Overheard at GameStop: I was at my local meme stock retailer last night and overheard one of the employees talking to a regular about the price of trying to upgrade their gaming PC. “Everything’s so expensive now,” the one said. “And the games are $70 now, too,” said the other. The collectible trading card section of the store is now bigger than the Switch 2 and Xbox sections combined.

Steam Machines starting at $1,000 or above?

Take this with a grain of salt, because it was just whispers in my ear

But back when I was told a figure for what Valve’s estimated price they’d have to set the starting price of Steam Machine, it was still higher than today’s Steam Deck prices..

And that was 2 months ago.. https://t.co/5NFhACz9NV

The recent news that Valve’s Steam Deck now starts at $790 understandably has many on edge about the prospect of the upcoming Steam Machine being anything other than a pricey niche device for existing superfans. “Back when I was told a figure for what Valve’s estimated price [was for the] Steam Machine, it was still higher than today’s Steam Deck prices,” tweeted Valve insider Brad Lynch this week. “And that was 2 months ago…”

The suggestion is that the Steam Machine might now start at $1,000, with the bigger SSD model costing even more. That might still be competitive with other gaming PCs in that range of performance, but prices like that are unlikely to convert anyone on the fence about switching from an existing console-based gaming platform. That is, unless the PlayStation 6 and Project Helix Xbox launch at north of $700. That $450—soon to be $500—Switch 2 ain’t looking so bad anymore.

Pragmata‘s producer would love to make a sequel

“Of course I’d love to see a sequel,” director Yonghee Cho told Gamesradar. “But I’m not the only one who decides, so unfortunately I can’t really comment beyond that.” This fairly anodyne sentiment apparently unleashed a mini-freakout, with Cho going onto stress that this was just his “own personal opinion,” and producer Naoto Oyama adding, “Please don’t take that line out of context.”

The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is an expansion, not a DLC

CD Projekt Red associate director Paweł Sasko retweeted a past interview with Idris Elba to make that point clear. “Just to be clear, it’s not DLC. It’s an expansion. You know why? Because we do expansions. Big! Massive! Monster! We don’t do DLCs, and when we do, we give them away,” the actor told IGN in the lead-up to Phantom Liberty‘s launch. We’ll see if inflation affects the price. Previous Witcher 3 expansions were around $20 each, which was practically a steal given their ambitious scope.

Hollow Knight Silksong‘s physical edition is still a few months away

That’s according to billbil-kun, who reports at Dealabs that the long-awaited SKU will be $40 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S and arrive on October 16. The game will be $45 on Switch 2, but that includes the Switch 1 and next-gen versions with no game key card in sight. There will even be a 32-page manual.

Persona 6 fans are buzzing about a possible new concept art leak

It seems that a reliable leaker pointed out these are official Persona 6 concept arts.

Online account Lolilolailo shared images on the Chinese social media website Xiaohongshu of apparent sketches of the upcoming RPG’s protagonists (via Reddit). This follows recent rumors that Persona 6 will feature dual protagonists and could appear at Summer Game Fest Live next week. Lolilolailo claims the game is targeting a 2027 release window. The alleged art leaks show one character with blond hair and another with black.

Sims competitor doubles down on no paid DLC promise

“There will never be paid DLCs, only free updates!” Paralives lead developer Alex Massé wrote on Reddit. “Even after the Early Access. As life sim fans, we wanted to make a game we would like to play ourselves without the need to purchase a lot of extra content and we are happy to deliver that. Because the team is small (only 15 people) the sales we made so far will sustain us for many years, even if we increase the size of the team so we’re safe and really grateful for that!”

Planet Zoo 2 gets announced

The game is coming to console and PC on October 13 and showed off new features in a fresh trailer. The game’s two new habitats are aquariums and aviaries, with a story that apparently goes deep into themes of conservation.

Final Sentence dev tells people not to buy it…

…until it goes on sale. “I want to make a short announcement about the upcoming sale so those who haven’t bought the game yet can save a couple bucks for a coffee or a compressed air duster for your keyboard,” the developer wrote this week (via PCGamesN). “Seriously, that thing is worth buying to clean years of dust and food crumbs out of your keyboard.” The typing battle royale will seemingly drop well below its $10 Steam price in the near future.
