The End Of An Era Comes For These 4 Legendary Games Very Soon

Death comes for everyone and everything, and that extends to certain types of video games. In the midst of the Stop Killing Games movement and the intense discussion of ownership, publishers continue to put their multiplayer projects out to pasture, shutting down the servers of once-beloved titles deemed no longer to warrant support. June marks the end (or the start of the end) of a couple of big games in massive franchises, or at least the closure of their online portion.

If you can tap into fond memories of playing these games and would like to jump back in for one final match, you don’t have any time left to waste. Boot up your console or Steam account and relive the glory days one last time. These releases entertained millions for the best part of a decade, and their story ends in the coming days.

Call of Duty Warzone Begins Its PS4 And Xbox One Shut Down Process On June 4

Removed From Stores On June 4, With Complete Sunsetting On October 23

Over the next few months, Activision will gradually remove Call of Duty Warzone from life support, at least the PS4 and Xbox One versions. Completed in steps, this process starts on June 4, when players will no longer be able to download Warzone from the PS and Xbox stores (for these versions). On June 25, Warzone shuts down its in-game stores, although that won’t impact the free Battle Pass. Once Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, Warzone becomes unplayable on the PS4 and Xbox One.

COD Points need to be redeemed by June 25, at least on PS4 and Xbox One.

As we saw with cross-gen games like Genshin Impact, there comes a time when supporting outdated versions no longer makes sense, either due to a declining player base or because the hardware cannot handle newer updates. PS4 and Xbox One players can continue their current Warzone experience and access content purchased through COD Points by playing on PC or more modern systems, as long as they use the same Activision account.

F2P MMORPG Closers Sunsets Its Global Version On June 24

An 11-Year-Old Game Writes Its Final International Chapter

Although not a massive name in North America and Europe, Closers is the most tenured game in this article. Launching in South Korea in 2014, the free-to-play action RPG enjoyed a strong start to life, but it seemed to struggle to foster a large, consistent community, never really transitioning from niche to mainstream. Despite debuting in late 2017, the English Steam version never fully found its footing, with its peak player count being just over 2,000. July 2022 marked the last time Closers cracked more than 200 concurrent players on Steam, although it might have been more successful on mobile devices.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank all of you who have been with and supported Closers World throughout the years.

Technically, I am part of the problem, as I dropped off Closers after a while. That said, Naddic put together a fun and stylish game that had pretty darn good combat, especially for an online RPG. The RPG supported solo play, with the episodic campaign being designed for single players who don’t mind a grind. In a way, it paved the way for the likes of Genshin Impact, even if it never enjoyed that level of success. Only the international version shall be shut down, as the South Korean release continues to be supported.

EA Turns Off Battlefield Hardline’s Console Servers On June 22

Hardline Goes Offline On PS4 And Xbox One

PS4 and Xbox One players are set to lose access to another massive shooter’s online features, with Battlefield Hardline sunsetting its servers on June 22. This date comes exactly one month after Hardline‘s removal from the PlayStation and Xbox stores, and EA confirmed that none of this impacts the PC version. Although they will no longer be able to go online, owners will continue to have access to the single-player content, preserving Battlefield Hardline‘s value due to the offline content being decent and substantial (for an online-focused shooter).

Every Battlefield Game, Ranked

Battlefield 6 is out! But, where does it sit among the best Battlefield games in EA’s franchise? First?

In recent times, EA seems to make these types of Battlefield announcements yearly, as games like Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 4 also lost console support (and the former’s PC servers were also sunset). Unfortunately, EA occasionally delists games as it shuts down servers, making them way more difficult to pick up for their single-player campaigns.

Just Put This Spin-Off Out Of Its Misery

Although not too many people’s favorite The Elder Scrolls game, Blades‘ closure still feels like a big deal, just due to the name recognition. Launching in 2020 to a pretty awful reception, the game entered maintenance mode within roughly two years, implying Bethesda had more or less decided to move on from the spin-off. Ditching an open world for linear missions, Blades suffered from many of the traditional trappings of free-to-play mobile releases: it was fueled by the power of microtransactions.

After removing it from stores a few months ago, Bethesda will shut down Blades’ servers on June 30, bringing to a close one of The Elder Scrolls‘ least successful attempts to branch out. As nice as it would be for the content to be preserved in some form or another, the game has been knocking on death’s door for basically its entire existence. Eventually, the Grim Reaper must answer.
