Stranger Than Heaven officially has a release date: January 15, 2027. The long-awaited announcement arrived in the form of a brand-new trailer that also revealed something much more unexpected than a January launch: Tupac Shakur as a Stranger Than Heaven character.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has long been comfortable bringing famous entertainers to its games, with its next big-budget project already providing a recent example with Snoop Dogg. That said, Snoop Dogg’s involvement in Stranger Than Heaven was teased years in advance by both the musician and the developer itself, making it far less of a shock than what RGG and Sega just showed at Summer Game Fest.
Stranger Than Heaven’s New Trailer Puts A Strange Twist On RGG’s Celebrity Cameo Tradition
According to Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, Tupac Shakur’s likeness was recreated for Stranger Than Heaven in cooperation with Amaru Entertainment, which manages the late rapper’s estate. The developer also clarified that the character model was made using archival footage and photos rather than AI, a detail that may help explain why Sega addressed the unusual casting choice so directly alongside the release date announcement. Surprise factor aside, the fact that Tupac will be dead for over 30 years by the time Stranger Than Heaven hits the market certainly makes this inclusion stand out from the typical Yakuza / Like a Dragon celebrity fare.
