The Internet Has Some Things To Say About GTA 6’s Price

The Internet Has Some Things To Say About GTA 6’s Price

Rockstar Games confirmed the price of Grand Theft Auto 6: A trip to Vice City will cost you $80 for the standard version of the game and $100 for the Ultimate Edition.

Preorders for the highly anticipated open-world game start June 25 at midnight local time, but the retail cost is sparking chatter online. As you can imagine, people are incensed at the precedent that Rockstar is perceived to be setting (though $80 games are already a thing), but it doesn’t help that the physical edition of GTA 6 is only a download code in a box.

I’ve never been much of a Grand Theft Auto guy, but even I was considering buying GTA 6 based purely on the hype and spectacle. But $80 for a game I can’t trade in or sell off if it’s not for me? That’s not a commitment I’m willing to make.

GTA 6 is 80 dollars. Grand Theft Auto Six is Eighty US Dollars. One hundred dollars for some digital bullshit, if you want. You don’t even get a disc! Take Two are cutting every corner and passing the savings on to no one.

Many who closely follow trends in the games industry, including journalist Imran Khan, aren’t surprised by the development.

None of the GTA6 info shocks me. $80 seems like what they have been indicating for years. Even if that game fits on a disc (I bet it doesn't), the decision on disc orders was probably made deep into Tariff Territory and discs get printed in Mexico and that was always going to be an issue.

Even if this outcome were predictable, the trend of rising costs has been a downer for many gaming enthusiasts.

> $1000+ consoles
> $80 games
> digital codes instead of discs

If this is what defines the 10th generation of gaming, it's a bleak future. pic.twitter.com/iwRikxY6me

It’s gonna be hilarious seeing a bunch of games try to charge $80 because Mario Kart and GTA did it, failing to realize they’re not Mario Kart and GTA https://t.co/aMX0EXzh00

Those who read the fine print of what’s included in the Ultimate Edition seem particularly irked, arguing that the features from that version of the game (namely activities and locations) should be in the base game.

Despite the name, the $100 GTA VI is not really an “Ultimate Edition.” That is the ACTUAL base game. The $80 “Standard Edition” is in fact the base game with standard elements from prior Grand Theft Auto games *removed*: character/vehicle customization, quest lines, parts of the map there at launch.

But for those who were never interested in GTA 6, the $80 price point and all of the trappings around its launch are even more justification not to buy the game. One social media user lightheartedly compared GTA 6 to the upcoming Rhythm Heaven Groove on Switch, though it’s admittedly a compelling case.

Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on November 19, with pre-loads available starting November 12. Physical copies with download codes will be available on that date as well to allow players to pre-load the game ahead of launch.
