GTA 6 Is Technically the Cheapest Grand Theft Auto Game

A comparison between Americans’ average wage and Grand Theft Auto 6‘s price suggests that Rockstar Games’ $80 title may actually be the most affordable mainline entry in the franchise. Recently, several outlets have compared Grand Theft Auto 6‘s price with the inflation-adjusted launch prices of previous installments to propose a similar argument. The catch, however, is that Americans are now spending a smaller share of their income on entertainment than they did in the past.

When adjusted for inflation, the most expensive Grand Theft Auto game appears to be GTA 3, which would cost $94.65 in 2026. The second most expensive is its successor, Vice City, whose launch price is equivalent to $93.12 in today’s economy. Of course, looking only at inflation rates may not be the most mathematically accurate way to compare costs from the consumer’s perspective. However, another piece of information also suggests that GTA 6 is actually a more affordable game than its predecessors, at least on paper.

GTA 6’s Price Is Equal to 0.119% of the Average Wage in the US

According to data from the National Average Wage Index, the average annual income for US workers in 2024 was $67,027, or roughly $5,600 per month. GTA 6‘s $80 price tag is, therefore, equivalent to 0.119% of that annual income, compared to a median of 0.15% for other mainline installments released since 2001. In other words, GTA 6 seems to account for a smaller share of a worker’s annual income than the typical Grand Theft Auto game since GTA 3. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean more people will be able to afford GTA 6 because other studies indicate that Americans are pushed to spend less on entertainment now.

Americans’ Entertainment Expenditure Has Shrunk Since 2001

Based on the latest data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Americans spent 5.38% of their 2024 income on entertainment, down from 6.18% in 2001. In other words, while the data suggests GTA 6‘s higher price represents a smaller share of the average buyer’s income, broader economic conditions have already tightened household budgets, leaving Rockstar Games’ open-world title with a seemingly smaller pool of potential consumers. Several economists have pointed to this trend as well.

Anthony Palomba, a professor at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, said, “As PC gaming remains resilient and the existing player base shows signs of attrition, there is greater pressure to convince existing gamers on the platform to spend more and engage more to maintain revenue streams.” The same trend can be seen among console players, as it has seemingly become increasingly difficult for big companies to convince users to buy brand-new AAA games. Given that, Rockstar Games’ jump from $69.99 to $79.99 for the standard edition of GTA 6 should be viewed as a bold move that many competitors may not be willing to make. Palomba believes Rockstar was able to justify the price increase because Grand Theft Auto has no real “substitutes” in the market.

Right now, players seem divided into two camps. One believes $80 is a fair price for a game of this scale, while the other argues that Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have become greedy. Meanwhile, the latest data suggests GTA 6 likely generated $1 billion within an hour of pre-orders going live. So, despite the criticism, the price hike doesn’t appear to have stopped millions of gamers from lining up to play Grand Theft Auto‘s sixth installment on day one. Now, the bigger question seems to no longer be whether players will accept GTA 6‘s higher price, but whether more AAA publishers will follow suit and attempt to make the $80 price tag the new standard.
