Final Fantasy Game is Permanently Shutting Down on September 30

Final Fantasy Game is Permanently Shutting Down on September 30

Square Enix and development partner Tencent have announced the shutdown of a Final Fantasy game, which is the second game to make end-of-service announcements in a short period. Recently, Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis would shut down on October 6, and another game is set to go before it.

What’s odd is that there are major single-player Final Fantasy games releasing within striking distance of these shutdowns. The HD-2D Final Fantasy Resonance game releases on October 22, just a few weeks after these two shutdowns. Then, in Spring 2027, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is set to release.

4 Square Enix Games Are Permanently Shutting Down

Square Enix officially announces the permanent delisting and shutdown date/times for 4 iconic games, yet the story doesn’t end there.

Final Fantasy 14 Mobile End-of-Service Shutdown Schedule

  • July 17: Purchases and New User Registration Suspended
  • September 30: Game operations cease. Servers and the website will shut down.
  • October 15: Customer Support Channels Close

Unfortunately, when Final Fantasy 7 Revelation hits the market, the world will be short two Final Fantasy games, with Final Fantasy 14 Mobile shutting down on September 30. Originally announced back in November 2024, Final Fantasy 14 Mobile saw a limited-time release in mainland China but had yet to release globally. Many Final Fantasy 14 fans who wanted to check out the Mobile game version simply will never be able to. Square Enix and Tencent have confirmed that the game is shutting down its servers on September 30, 2026, and the global version has been canceled. Square Enix cites “business operations and changes in the market environment” as the rationale.

As of July 18, game purchases and registrations have been suspended. Everything will shut down on September 30, and then any possible customer support channels will shut down a little thereafter on October 15. Final Fantasy fans have been concerned about Final Fantasy 14 Mobile‘s global release following an update, and unfortunately, it seems their fears were justified. To fans, Square Enix has stated,

“To everyone who has journeyed with us until now, we sincerely apologize that we must end this service without being able to fully live up to your expectations. At the same time, we wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of you who have supported us along the way. Thank you, truly, from the bottom of our hearts. To everyone who has been looking forward to the global version, we also offer our sincere apologies for being unable to meet your expectations.”

Chinese players who are playing the game have 75 or so days left with it before its servers shut down forever. And as this is all unfortunate news, and no gamer benefits from a shut down, it’s worth highlighting that 70+ days is at least a respectful head’s up. Several game shutdowns lately from companies like Warner Bros. have been done so quietly, with no announcement or fanfare, and that makes a bad situation worse every time.
