Bethesda Releases New Official Statement on Fallout Game Remasters

Bethesda Game Studios has officially commented on and acknowledged the long-standing rumors of Fallout game remasters, directly remarking not on one of them but both. However, while this is an exciting prospect for the future of Fallout, the exact context of this confirmation is important.

Recently, Xbox announced a grand total of 3200 layoffs across studios under its umbrella, with 1600 going into effect the day of and 1600 happening throughout the rest of the fiscal year. Many developers under Bethesda’s development umbrella, including those at BGS proper, have also been impacted. It seems, then, that Bethesda saw fit to lay out its current development plan, including continued support on Starfield, pre-production on Fallout 5, and active development on The Elder Scrolls 6.

New Fallout Game Reportedly Canceled

A reputable gaming journalist comments on a new, unannounced Fallout game developed by a Microsoft studio apparently being canceled.

Fallout Remasters Are Now Official

Regarding the Fallout IP, much more than Fallout 5 is in the works per Bethesda’s official statement. It revealed that it was working on a major Fallout 76 expansion called Raven Rock that will be a prequel to Fallout 3, that Fallout Shelter has more ahead, that the Amazon show season 3 is in the works, and that Fallout Day in 2027 will be celebrated in Washington D.C. But in a first, it also confirmed the Fallout remasters are real:

“We also know many players want to revisit previous Fallout experiences. While we’re not announcing any dates today, we have been working on remasters for both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.”

Given everything going on at Bethesda Game Studios, it’s worth mentioning that it is unlikely that BGS is directly developing these games, but more or less overseeing their development. Similar to Obsidian Remastered, which was developed by Virtuos with input and oversight by BGS, the Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas remasters are belived to be primarily worked on at other studios. It also would not commit to any release dates, but rumors suggest that Fallout 3‘s remaster is coming in 2027. With Fallout Day 2027 celebrating in Washington D.C, it will presumably be around then (which is October 23).

Bethesda has also confirmed that it’s working on a brand-new Fallout game alongside Obsidian, which previously developed Fallout: New Vegas. Very little was said about it, even less than the remasters, but it’s exciting to see these two RPG juggernauts team up once more, even if the exact context isn’t heartwarming. The Fallout franchise’s future looks bright, nonetheless, despite the very severe modern pains afflicted upon game developers.

Xbox’s layoffs are a symptom, not the disease, and the gaming industry’s current squeeze is damaging individual’s livelihoods, the future of gaming, and more. While it’s great to see these Fallout games are happening and are real, it’s worth remembering the cost to BGS and everything it took to even get to this moment. Hopefully, everyone impacted lands on their feet sooner rather than later, and these Fallout games do not have this shadow lingering over them forever.
