New Official Game of Thrones Release With Jon Snow Confirmed for 2027

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is now due to debut in early 2027 as a result of its first official delay. The real-time strategy game’s new release window also doubles as a rough timeline for when Jon Snow will be back on virtual battlefields, which War for Westeros will have in spades.

Made by Melbourne-based PlaySide Studios, War for Westeros is a new video game adaptation of HBO’s Game of Thrones series. The Australian developer announced the project during the June 2025 edition of Summer Game Fest with a two-minute cinematic reveal trailer, which ended on a promise of a 2026 launch. PlaySide reiterated that broad release window as recently as June 2026, but the schedule appears to have changed just one month later.

As House of the Dragon Season 3 nears its finale, one major character’s arc increasingly falls short of the book’s portrayal.

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros Will Launch in Early 2027

In a July 2026 development update, PlaySide officially announced that its upcoming RTS is being postponed. More specifically, War for Westeros will now launch in early 2027. Elaborating on the reasons for the delay, the studio said it needs more time to reach its desired quality standard. A company representative has nonetheless added that the overall development is progressing well, promising to share more details about the game in the latter half of 2026.

War for Westeros Showcases Jon Snow’s Rallying Call Skill

The same development update also provided more details on Jon Snow’s previously teased role in Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, most notably through a brief animation showing him rallying Stark troops in battle. PlaySide shared a similar clip of Tywin Lannister rallying his very own bannermen. In War for Westeros, both characters are designed as Hero units that can level up, unlock new abilities, and strengthen nearby allies, but their rallying abilities appear to work slightly differently.

How Jon Snow’s Ally Buff Compares to Tywin Lannister’s in New Game of Thrones RTS

Jon’s buff is a straightforward area-of-effect spell that spreads outward from his position. Tywin, meanwhile, can choose where to deploy his buff in his immediate vicinity. Not only does that give him greater effective range, but the rallying call itself also covers a roughly 50% larger area than Jon’s. PlaySide has not yet confirmed the full details of either ability, but Tywin’s rally appears to offer greater tactical flexibility, potentially at the expense of offensive or defensive strength.

House Stark and House Lannister will be joined by House Targaryen and the Night King’s White Walker army as playable factions in PlaySide’s upcoming Game of Thrones video game. The limited promotional materials shared by the Australian developer to date suggest that War for Westeros is designed to emphasize responsive squad movement and encourage players to deploy direct counters, which exist aplenty thanks to the game’s rock-paper-scissors style of balancing. For example, exposed archers should typically be forced to scatter with cavalry, while large groups of infantrymen are a prime target for giants, who can hurl them into the air en masse without taking much damage. PlaySide also recently showcased Ashemark, a two-lane map designed for one-on-one battles centered on defensive positions, flanking routes, and territorial control.
