Star Trek Game Permanently Shutting Down on August 20

Star Trek Game Permanently Shutting Down on August 20

Star Trek: Legends, which was released on PC and consoles in 2024, is scheduled to permanently shut down its servers on August 20. Star Trek: Legends originally launched on Apple Arcade in 2021 and was later ported to major platforms, including Steam, Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox.

Many fans were already expecting Star Trek: Legends to be sunset after its PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo console editions were quietly removed. Now, an official statement from developer Tilting Point suggests the game will become unplayable for all users, with even its offline modes no longer working.

EA Game is Permanently Shutting Down Later This Year

Yet another EA game is confirmed to be shutting down its servers permanently later this year, so fans should plan accordingly.

Star Trek: Legends Will No Longer Exist on PC

Following the removal of its console versions, the Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store editions of Star Trek: Legends are also set to be sunset on August 20, 2026. Those who already own the game or purchase it before that date will be able to continue playing for a limited time. Developer Tilting Point plans to permanently shut down the game’s servers on September 3, 2026, after which “the game will officially be taken offline and will no longer be playable.”

In Legends, players had to assemble teams of famous space voyagers featuring many familiar faces and iconic Star Trek characters. The gameplay could be described as light turn-based combat, with several offline modes to collect resources and unlock new heroes through non-aggressive gacha-style mechanics.

Why Star Trek: Legends Is Being Delisted

So far, the developer has not provided a specific reason for the imminent shutdown. However, it appears to be related to licensing issues. In recent months, several games have been delisted for similar reasons, including another installment from the very same franchise, Star Trek: Resurgence. Interestingly, Resurgence received positive reviews across most platforms but was removed anyway, leaving many players disappointed.

A small-scale review bombing campaign appears to be taking place on Steam, as Star Trek: Legends‘ recent reviews are now rated Mostly Negative. While it’s normal for fans to be frustrated when games are delisted, one thing that has fueled their anger toward Tilting Point is the decision to remove the offline content as well. Star Trek: Legends has extensive offline content that could still keep players engaged, but the publisher plans to take down the entire game, removing both its offline and online features. This further supports the theory that the delisting is licensing based.

Together with Star Trek: Prodigy: Supernova and Star Trek: Resurgence, Legends is the third game in the franchise to be shelved in recent months. This also comes at the worst possible time for any game to end support or shut down its servers, as the gaming community is actively fighting big corporations to protect players’ ownership rights. Many believe that charging people tens of dollars, $20 in the case of Star Trek: Legends, only to later remove the game from their libraries should be illegal.

One of the strongest fronts in this battle is the Stop Killing Games movement, which started after Ubisoft shut down The Crew. SKG has been trying to convince regulators to find legal ways to prevent video game sunsets or at least regulate them, making it harder for publishers to pull the plug on games without warning. As for Star Trek: Legends, there seems to be no hope of preserving it, and those who loved it will only have until September 3 to play it one last time before it’s gone for good.

At the time of writing, it remains uncertain whether Star Trek: Legends will be delisted from Apple Arcade too. However, the wording of the official announcement suggests that the game will become unplayable on all platforms.
