Final Fantasy & 3 Other RPGs Officially Shutting Down Soon

Final Fantasy & 3 Other RPGs Officially Shutting Down Soon

Even if it might not be something you play, a game announcing plans to sunset always comes with an air of sadness. When an online-only RPG shuts down its server, a small part of the gaming landscape transitions into gaming history, only remembered by a select few who had moved on a long time ago. Within the coming months, four fairly massive role-playing games will close their doors and officially say goodbye.

While all these titles announced their impending closures a while back, lapsed fans could easily have missed this news; consequently, this article hopes to ensure that anybody who wants to play them one final time gets the opportunity to do so.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis Becomes History On October 6

Lifespan: 3 Years And 1 Month

Square Enix doesn’t have the greatest track record with Final Fantasy mobile games, and Ever Crisis will soon join The First Soldier, Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia, Mobius Final Fantasy, and Brave Exvius in the graveyard. Of all the dead mobile spin-offs, this one arguably hurts the most, as the ambitious project sought to provide a less complicated way to experience the FF7 compilation.

The Most Disappointing Final Fantasy Games Of All Time, Ranked

A long-enduring franchise like Final Fantasy isn’t immune to disappointments, as illustrated by these games that didn’t quite live up to expectations.

While retelling many established stories found in other releases, Ever Crisis also adds its own elements to the narrative and lore, particularly through Sephiroth, Glenn, and the First Soldier squad. These tidbits could all be lost once the game shuts down its server, and Square Enix hasn’t announced plans to release an offline version.

We hope you continue to enjoy FINAL FANTASY VII EVER CRISIS during the limited time remaining until the end of service on Oct. 6, 2026, at 11:00 PM PDT. Thank you, as always, for your support.

Star Trek Legends Warp Drives Into The Sun On September 3

Lifespan: 5 Years, 5 Months (On Mobile)

Debuting in 2021 as part of Apple Arcade, Star Trek Legends didn’t come to consoles and PC until the end of 2024, when it received a lukewarm reception and attracted little attention considering the franchise’s name recognition. Unlike the original version, the PC and console ports were free-to-play with traditional gacha mechanics. Combined with the negative reviews and mobile gameplay loop, Star Trek Legends basically had no chance to build any momentum.

While the turn-based combat and gameplay loop suffered from too much repetitive grind, Star Trek Legends‘ concept had potential. Using the Nexus, the game assembled characters from different genres, bringing them together for an original story penned by Mike Johnson, a Star Trek comic writer.

From all of us, thank you for being part of the Star Trek: Legends community and for making this journey through the Nexus such a memorable one.

Tower Of Fantasy Leaves PS4 On October 20

Following in Genshin Impact‘s footsteps, Tower of Fantasy will no longer be playable on PS4 from October 20, as the console’s limitations have just become too significant to overcome. Perfect World Games provided ample notice of this closure, delisting the PS4 version in April 2026 while allowing players to keep enjoying the open-world RPG for roughly 6 more months.

Best Games That Go On Forever

The fun never has to stop with these games, offering experiences that never have to end.

Unfortunately, most successful live-service games released across generations eventually reach a point when the last-gen iteration becomes an albatross, dragging everything else down and demanding too much of hardware more than a decade old. Tower of Fantasy held on for about as long as it could have, to be honest.

Due to issues with performance optimization and application size limitations, we regret to inform you that we will discontinue our support and updates for Tower of Fantasy on PlayStation 4.

New World: Aeternum Sunsets on January 31, 2027

Lifespan: 5 Years, 4 Months

New World Aeternum Details Season 8 content

When Amazon delisted the game at the start of 2026, New World: Aeternum entered its final year, hopefully giving players enough time to experience any content they might have missed. That said, such a long sunset period becomes awkward since the in-game economy is essentially dead.

We want to thank the players for your dedication and passion. We are grateful for the time spent crafting the world of Aeternum with you.

Despite nearly cracking 1 million concurrent Steam players in October 2021, New World didn’t manage to maintain that momentum, partially thanks to a rushed launch, poor endgame content, and its confused “action RPG” identity. Amazon appears to be pivoting away from internal IPs to third-party publishing deals like Tomb Raider and The Lord of the Rings, and New World‘s termination represents the end of that shift.
