Game of Thrones fans should circle Tuesday, August 25 on their calendars, as that’s when the next big video game based on the franchise will be shown off. Game of Thrones is a pop culture phenomenon, and while most fans are mainly concerned about the TV shows, plenty of games based on the series have been released over the years.
Game of Thrones video games have included an action-RPG developed by Cyanide, an episodic Telltale adventure game, a variety of mobile projects, and more. One of the most exciting Game of Thrones games is the upcoming Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, and while little of it has been shown so far, fans now know when they can expect to see it next.
It’s been confirmed that Game of Thrones: War for Westeros will be featured at Gamescom Opening Night Live on Tuesday, August 25. The event will start at 2pm EST and will include a full-blown gameplay reveal of Game of Thrones: War for Westeros. The teaser trailer making this announcement features Lannister soldiers charging across a battlefield, only for a large chunk of them to be obliterated by dragon fire. What’s been shown so far makes Game of Thrones: War for Westeros seem like it could be a high-quality real-time strategy game, and fans should have a much better idea of what to expect from the game when they tune in to Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros was originally revealed at Summer Game Fest in 2025 with a 2026 release window. Unfortunately, it was recently announced that Game of Thrones: War for Westeros‘ release date has been delayed to early 2027 instead. It’s possible that a more specific release date will come with the game’s new trailer at Gamescom Opening Night Live, but fans shouldn’t hold their breath. Chances are the trailer will be mainly focused on gameplay, as promised by the teaser, though that should still make it plenty worth tuning in for fans of the franchise.
The new Game of Thrones: War for Westeros gameplay reveal comes hot off the heels of the House of the Dragon Season 3 finale. House of the Dragon has one more season left, with the fourth and final season expected to air at some point in 2028. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has more seasons on the way in the meantime, and there’s also a movie about Aegon the Conqueror in development. An Arya Stark sequel series is on the way as well, so Game of Thrones fans should have plenty to look forward to, even if they aren’t into the video games.
As far as video games go, the various Game of Thrones mobile games continue to get new events and updates, and fans have War for Westeros to look forward to in 2027. Notably, there hasn’t been a home console Game of Thrones game released in years, and nothing new has been announced. Considering the franchise’s persistent popularity, though, one has to imagine that it’s only a matter of time before fans get their proper home console GoT.
