Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen players will officially be able to get Celebi for free very soon. Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen came out as Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 ports on Pokemon Day 2026, and they quickly became some of the most successful titles sold on the official Nintendo Store, often claiming first and second place on the sales charts, respectively. Ever since the ports came out, though, players have been asking about Pokemon Home support, as the Pokedex cannot be completed natively within the ports.
This is because Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen would actually need Gen 3 games to complete the National Pokedex via trading, as some Pokemon cannot be found in either title regardless of version exclusivity. Now, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen‘s Home compatibility is finally coming in October 2026, as announced recently, and this is great news for players on multiple fronts. Not only will players be able to transfer Pokemon caught in FRLG, but they will also be able to complete their Home Pokedex with them simply by registering them in-game — no transfer needed. On top of that, fans will also get Celebi entirely for free.
You Can Now Officially Get Celebi Thanks to Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen
When Home support launches, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen players will be able to complete their Pokedex in Pokemon Home simply by registering critters in the Switch ports, which will unlock Celebi in Pokemon Home for free. Currently, there is no way to get Celebi in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen natively, and unfortunately, this will not change with Home support. In fact, The Pokemon Company confirmed that fans won’t be able to transfer Pokemon into FRLG, but only from the ports. As such, the National Pokedex issue remains, despite the addition of a free Celebi within Pokemon Home for completing the Pokedex.

However, this could mean that the Switch and Switch 2 ports for Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald are coming in October 2026 alongside Home support, which would be perfectly timed. These games are needed to finish the National Pokedex in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, so launching them alongside Pokemon Home compatibility is a smart move. Before Home support was even confirmed for October 2026, the Gen 3 ports were also leaked to be planned for the same month. This makes sense because Celebi may be one of the few Pokemon that won’t be obtainable for Pokemon FRLG‘s National Pokedex even after Home support launches, so giving it away for free in the mobile app for Pokemon Home is a perfect way to handle it.
Since the official announcement of Pokemon FRLG‘s Home support doesn’t specify that Pokedex completion needs to be for the National Pokedex to get Celebi, it’s likely it just means the base games’ Pokedex. Players don’t even need to catch Mew in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen to finish the Kanto Pokedex, as only the first 150 critters out of 151 will suffice.
For now, fans can still get Ho-Oh and Lugia in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, as well as Deoxys, from post-game events. These are part of Pokemon FRLG‘s National Pokedex, as is Celebi. However, since Celebi will only be available in the mobile app for Pokemon Home, fans who complete the Pokedex and want to collect their free Mythical Pokemon will need to download the mobile app and connect it to Home.
