Riot Game Development Permanently Shutting Down in December 2026

Riot Games has confirmed the end of active development for one of its games in December 2026, although it is not all bad news. In short, the company has revealed that the League of Legends fighting game 2XKO has not retained enough players to keep the game profitable, and so it’s closing the door on this chapter. As of this writing, it sits at a 78 Metascore on Metacritic and a 4.8 on the platform, swinging from generally favorable to generally unfavorable.

Fighting games have a dedicated audience, and despite support from various parts of the community, Riot says it ultimately cost more to operate 2XKO than what it brings in. Larger updates would not have closed the gap, according to Riot Games.

Square Enix Game is Permanently Shutting Down on October 6

Square Enix announces the shutdown date and time for one of the games in its beloved and ongoing Final Fantasy franchise.

Say Farewell to League of Legends Fighting Game 2XKO

2XKO will end development at the end of 2026, but there’s content coming between now and then. That does not mean 2XKO is immediately going completely offline. Riot plans to release the remaining planned content through the end of 2026, including two new 2XKO champions in Lux and Samira before delivering its final bug-fix patch in December. The servers will remain online after active development ends, meaning players will still be able to play 2XKO across its supported platforms, though Riot has not committed to continuing regular content updates beyond that point. Of course, the end of this does mean that the company will, eventually, move to take the game completely offline, but whether that’s a matter of months or years is up in the air.

Riot is also making major changes to the 2XKO‘s microtransactions and economy as part of the transition. First, all champions will be unlocked, letting players check out anyone they haven’t yet. Secondly, most cosmetic items will be bundled, and Riot will refund money spent on 2XKO through August 20. The move gives existing players access to essentially everything they need to continue playing without worrying about the game’s future, while also serving as a final gesture toward the community that stuck with 2XKO. Ultimately, Riot says the decision was made after determining that continuing to invest in another year of development without a clear path toward sustainability would not be responsible for either players or the development team.

While it’s always sad to see a game march toward the gallows, Riot is at least giving the diehards in the 2XKO community this information beforehand. There have been plenty of video games shut down without warning, which only makes a bad situation worse. 2XKO certainly had promise, and it’s unfortunate it was not able to deliver for either Riot or its core players in the way that would have made it sustainable.

It remains to be seen what Riot Games does with its extra resources. It’s understood that Riot is working on a handful of games alongside its live-service multiplayer catalog, which includes League of Legends and Valorant. It’s reportedly working on an MMOFPS in the world of Valorant, a dungeon-crawler in the world of Runeterra, and an MMORPG in the League of Legends universe. As of this writing, the status of these projects is unknown, but hopefully, members of the 2XKO team are able to jump on them.
