Rockstar Games has responded to the ongoing leaks surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6 in an internal message to developers. Indeed, some fans have been so eager to learn more about the game that they could not wait for the proper reveal via Netflix’s GTA 6: An Extended Look on August 27 and have instead focused on the various clips released by hacker Cyberleek.
The ongoing situation is unfortunate for many developers, but a former Rockstar dev has highlighted something all devs and fans should keep in mind: not everyone is even aware. While the internet can, at times, make things seem further reaching than they are, many folks have not watched the leaked GTA 6 gameplay clips and may not even be aware of them. The response to the leaks will be nothing like the response to the Netflix debut of GTA 6, in which fans get their deepest look at the game yet.
Rockstar Devs are Frustrated, But Confidence is Still High in the Final Game/Marketing
This sentiment is also expressed in an official company email sent by a high-ranking Rockstar Games executive, as reported by Bloomberg. In short, one of the top executives has denounced the GTA 6 gameplay leaks and the leaker, as expected, but promised the incident would not detract from “the excellent work” done on the upcoming release of GTA 6. Many devs, as well as fans, are looking toward the Netflix as the next big day on the road to release in November, and it promises to be the day that fans get a deep dive on the game. The leaks released so far simply will not be able to compare, but that does not mean everyone is happy.

Despite the legal response by Take-Two Interactive and the internal responses by Rockstar Games, many Rockstar devs are upset by these GTA 6 leaks. Rockstar ended remote work and increased security after the data breach in 2022. Not only are they frustrated that these increased security measures didn’t work despite the extreme measures taken, as well as the fact they’ve crunched and given up remote work for this, but many are no doubt upset to see their work showed off this way. Despite Cyberleek’s supposedly noble agenda, the fact remains that many Rockstar devs gave up a lot for this game, and it isn’t being shown the way they may want.
Luckily, assuming that the Rockstar Games exec is indeed accurate (and they most likely are), none of it should matter once GTA 6 hits Netflix. There will be no interest in GTA 6 gameplay leaks when, presumably, real gameplay is out there for perusal. Unfortunately, that could mean an escalation by Cyberleek before and/or after to retain attention, but it remains to be seen. And the silver lining for Rockstar devs is that these leaks will almost certainly not impact GTA 6 pre-orders or sales in any way.

Meanwhile, GTA 6 publisher Take-Two Interactive is aggressively pursuing the leaker, having subpeona’d both Discord and Microsoft and investigating any loose connection. Perhaps the most upsetting part for many Rockstar devs in all this is that, despite all the security measures, the GTA 6 leaker has not yet been caught. There are conspiracy theories this is all a marketing ploy ahead of the Netflix Extended Look, but how all of this resolves remains to be seen.
