Songs of the Past DLC Officially Confirms Returning Feature Ahead of Gamescom

The Witcher 3‘s Songs of the Past DLC is confirmed for Gamescom Opening Night Live, meaning fans will get their first official in-game look on August 25 at 11 am PT/2 pm ET, but developer CD Projekt Red has revealed a little detail ahead of then. And while, in the grand scheme of things, it’s indeed a small detail for The Witcher 3, it’s something fans the world over will love.

Back in May, CD Projekt Red announced a new, full-scale expansion for The Witcher 3 titled Songs of the Past. This announcement was as bare-bones as it comes, but it is expected to connect to The Witcher 4. Songs of the Past is a full “expansion,” with CDPR preferring that language over DLC because of its scope—which is comparable to Blood and Wine. Other than this, which will change at Gamescom, the only thing CDPR has confirmed thus far is that The Witcher 3‘s Songs of the Past DLC will come to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2027.

October 20 is Going To Be a Great Day For Cyberpunk Fans

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners fans will have an amazing October, as the release date for the hit anime’s second season has been officially announced.

It’s Official: Gwent Returns in Songs of the Past

Fans will learn more about the upcoming Witcher 3 DLC at Gamescom Opening Night Live, but CD Projekt Red community manager Marcin Łukaszewski has confirmed even more Gwent is coming to the game, too. As fans know, Gwent is so popular that it received its own spin-off, and even that did not deter The Witcher 3 fans from playing Gwent in-game. And while some fans were hopeful it would return, Lukaszewski has ended any speculation with confirmation: Gwent returns.

The trailer for The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past probably won’t focus on Gwent so much, not only given the price of a Gamescom trailer but perhaps the more mainstream draw to the game being its action and narrative, so this confirmation is a treat for fans. What’s more, it does give them something else to look forward to—The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past’s in-game setting. Assuming the scope of Gwent additions is also similar to Hearts of Stone or Blood and Wine, fans can expect a handful of cards with loose-to-close connections or features to the location/story/so forth.

In other words, The Witcher 3‘s new DLC is likely to add cards inspired by the presumed new locations, plus new folks to play against. Both prior Witcher 3 DLCs did something similar, although general cards are introduced too. Hearts of Stone, for example, added cards based on the four main factions, a few neutral unit cards, and unique faction cards. Meanwhile, Blood and Wine introduced the Skellige Gwent Deck, as well as a dedicated Gwent Tournament in Toussaint.

There are still a lot of questions about The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, but fans can expect Gamescom to answer some (although not all) of them. Gwent is one of the biggest questions that probably would not have been answered at Gamescom, but it’s also important enough for fans that the community manager managed to get an answer approved. That’s good news for its release, plus whatever is planned for Gwent in The Witcher 4.
