Xbox And PlayStation Back Off Multiplatform Messaging

Xbox And PlayStation Back Off Multiplatform Messaging

There was a moment when it seemed like the age of consoles might be over and an open, PC-like ecosystem was in every gamer’s future. But the markers of that multiplatform push are now being stripped out of console makers’ marketing. Microsoft is stripping PS5 logos out of trailers while Sony signals its new exclusives aren’t coming to PC.

As Push Square recently noticed, a Minecraft Dungeons 2 trailer posted last week on Xbox’s YouTube channel no longer mentions Nintendo’s consoles or Sony’s. That’s in contrast to previous trailers, which called out all platforms the game was releasing on. I’d expect that trend to continue in Microsoft’s presence at Gamescom 2026. Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty previously defended having other companies’ platform logos in its showcases because, understandably, people watching don’t want to be misled about where they can play those games.

But new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma later called that reasoning “a miss.” This was around the same time that Xbox removed a Halo: Campaign Evolved promo from a PlayStation State of Play presentation and decided to declare that Gears of War: E-Day would not come to PS5 at all.

While Microsoft’s fresh flirtation with console exclusivity remains confusing and in flux, Sony is doing everything it can to signal that its new first-party games won’t come to PC without actually coming out and saying that. The shift away from porting games like Spider-Man 2 to PC was first reported by Bloomberg. While PlayStation leadership has yet to officially comment on the move, Game File later noticed that the phrase “plans to continue its efforts to deploy its first-party titles to multiple platforms such as PC” was cut from Sony’s 2026 strategy document.

Now, a new ad for PlayStation first-party releases that shows games like Ghost of Yotei, Saros, and Marvel’s Wolverine has the phrase “PlayStation 5 exclusive” plastered on it, implying that there are no plans for these games to come to PC at a later date. Sony has yet to announce a new multiplatform experiment like the one it conducted when it brought Helldivers 2 to Xbox Series X/S.

Current Sony-published PS5 exclusive Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls would be an obvious candidate for being ported to Xbox and Switch 2 since it’s technically a live-service online multiplayer game. At this point, though, I’m not holding my breath.
